While the contemporary styling on the Volvo V60 is still showing little to no sign of ageing, some of the components that make it run might do. Items such as the starter battery will need to be replaced every four to six years depending on environmental factors and the use of the battery. Luckily the procedure is quite simple and can be done at home.
What do you need?
- Flat tipped screwdriver.
- Socket wrench with extender rod.
- 10mm socket
- Replacement car battery.

Before starting the replacement procedure, try and position the vehicle in a well-lit area. Also, be sure to switch off the vehicle before commencing and leave the vehicle for 5 minutes to store information in the ECU unit.
Replacement steps
Step 1: Locate the bonnet lever in the footwell of your Volvo V60. Once pulled, move to the front of the vehicle and locate the bonnet release to open the engine lid. Secure the bonnet open with the support strut.
Step 2: Standing in front of the vehicle, locate the starter battery located on the right of the engine bay. Unclip all four securing clips on the plastic cover and remove the cover.
Step 3: Proceed to lift the rubberized seal from its position and stow it away from the battery compartment.
Step 4: Using the flat-tipped screwdriver, turn the securing pin on the secondary battery cover and remove the cover.
Step 5: Using the 10mm socket attached to the socket wrench, undo the nut securing the black negative cable to the negative terminal. Once loose, stow away from the battery.
Step 6: Move to the red positive cable and undo the nut to detach it from the positive terminal. Stow the cable away from the positive terminal.
Step 7: Proceed to detach the ventilation hose from the battery.
Step 8: Using the 10mm socket attached to the extender rod on the socket wrench, undo the securing bolt situated at the left base of the battery.
Step 9: The battery is now ready to be removed. Slide the battery towards the front of the vehicle and lift it out of position.
Step 10: Insert the replacement battery, taking care of the correct orientation.
Step 11: You can now follow all the steps in reverse order to secure the new battery into position and connect all the cables and hose. Be sure to not overtighten any nuts or bolts.
