The average lifespan of a car battery is roughly 2-3 years, and after that time period the battery will begin to degrade. This can lead to issues with onboard electronics and engine startups. When it is time to replace the battery you can save yourself some money and tackle the job of exchanging right at home.

With just a few simple tools and about 15 minutes we can show you how it's done.

You will need:

Replacement battery of correct size and amperage
Plastic rivet removal tool
10mm wrench

Let's get it done

1. Open the bonnet

2. Locate the battery

3. Remove cover

4. Use the rivet tool to remove the plastic rivets that hold down the battery cover plate

5. Remove the rivets that hold down the cowl piece

6. Remove the cowl seal

7. Remove the cowl to expose the whole battery

8. Use the 10mm wrench to remove the negative (-) terminal

9. Use the 10mm the remove the positive (+) terminal

10. Use the wrench to remove the hold-down bracket

11. Exchange battery

12. Assemble in reverse order
