How to replace a lightbulb on a E46 BMW M3

We show you how to replace the Xenon headlight bulbs on an E46 BMW M3

In the days before LED systems became the norm, Xenon headlights were the top tier fitment available on high-end vehicles. These systems far outperformed the standard halogen units. As these vehicles have aged, the time will come when the bulbs eventually go out, and you will need to replace them.

You can tackle this bit of DIY work right at home with no tools needed and here is how it's done

 

 

You will need:

  • Replacement Xenon bulbs of desired colour range
  • Soft cloth

 

 

Let's get it done

 

1. Open the bonnet

 

2. Locate the back of the headlight cluster in the engine bay

 

3. Locate the small black cover that protects the back of the bulb

 

4. Remove the cover 

 

5. Remove the connector plug from the bulb holder

 

6. Twist the holder retainer to remove the bulb holder

 

7. Remove bulb holder

 

8. Exchange bulb

 

9. Reassemble in reverse order

 

WARNING! - Xenon lighting systems require high voltage to operate and there is a risk of electric shock if proper care is not taken before bulb removal
