How much should a car battery cost?

Your car's battery is a consumable item that should be replaced during major service intervals to prevent electrical issues down the road. This is how much a battery should cost you.

The average life expectancy of a car battery is 2 to 5 years, depending on use rate and environmental factors. A car's battery should be checked every 6 months, and replaced as soon as you notice any electrical gremlins.

The cost of a car battery ranges widely for standard internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The price depends heavily on the battery size, e.g., 619, 652, 668, the brand, and whether your car requires specialised technology like Start-Stop.

Factors that influence the price

  • Technology (EFB vs. AGM): If your car has a Start-Stop system, you cannot use a standard lead-acid battery. You will need an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery.

  • Battery Size: A 619 or 646 battery is smaller and cheaper, while a 652 or 668 battery, found in diesel SUVs and luxury cars, is larger and more expensive.

  • The Scrap Surcharge: Most retailers offer the prices listed above as exchange prices. If you don’t bring your old battery back to the shop, you may be charged an extra R250 to R400 as a scrap surcharge.

  • Warranty: Most reputable South African brands (Willard, Sabat, Exide) offer a 24-month or 25-month warranty. Cheaper "budget" brands might only offer 12 months.
