Car service costs in South Africa: What to expect

The importance of servicing your car regularly cannot be stated enough, but what can consumers expect to pay when that all-important service plan runs out?

Car Ownership3 min read

Car service costs in South Africa can vary significantly based on the type of service required, your vehicle, and where you go. There are brand-owned service centres, dealership or franchised service centres, and privately owned garages. The type and size of your car's engine will also determine the costs, as well as which service is due to your car.

The age and mileage of your car will also determine the service cost. Cars that are still under warranty and service plan will generally not have any costs associated with these services, but older cars outside of warranty and service plan will incur costs that you will have to pay out of pocket. When dealing with cars of this nature, this is typically what a consumer can expect to pay.

How often should I service my car?

Key Factors that Influence the Price

  • Vehicle make and model: Luxury or high-performance European brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi are typically the most expensive due to specialised parts and higher labour rates for their brand-specific expertise.

  • Service provider:

    • Franchise dealerships are generally the most expensive, but they use Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts and brand-trained technicians, which is often a requirement to keep a new vehicle's warranty valid.

    • Independent workshops: Often 20-40% cheaper than dealerships. They provide a cost-effective option and may use quality aftermarket parts, but ensure they are RMI (Retail Motor Industry Organisation) approved.

  • Location: Service costs can be higher in major metropolitan areas like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban due to higher operating costs and labour rates.

  • Service plan or Warranty: If your vehicle is new, it may have a service plan that covers the cost of parts and labour for scheduled services or a motor plan that also covers some wear-and-tear items, like brakes. Once these expire, you will have to bear the full cost of replacement.

  • Unexpected repairs: The biggest variable is any additional repair work, e.g., brake pad replacement, new shocks, or unexpected oil leaks found during the service. Always request a full quote before authorising this extra work.

We recommend always getting a detailed quote from a few different service providers and ensuring they specify whether they are using OEM or high-quality aftermarket parts.
