4 Mahindra Thar accessories you didn’t know you needed

Visiting Mahindra’s South African web page shows no mention of a Thar (or Thar accessories) of any description anymore – neither the old model nor its replacement are given any coverage, and it’s disappeared from the local price lists as well. This likely means that all stock of the old Thar has been sold out, but it also doesn’t give any indication as to the new model’s arrival. 

But, for the moment, you can still improve on your older Thar by fitting some well-judged accessories, to make it easier to live with and nicer to behold. We selected these accessories based on the Thar’s primary reason for existence: being an off-roader par excellence.

1. Audio system

You could fit literally any aftermarket audio system to an old-generation Thar, and it would constitute an improvement. It’s not that the standard-fit audio system is bad, it’s really that there isn’t any audio system fitted as standard at all! Installing some tune-playing device isn’t a bad idea at all, because it will help drown out the wind- and tyre roar on the road to your favourite off-roading spot...

The centre console has a slot for a single-DIN head unit, although a double-DIN unit could be fitted along with a dedicated (aftermarket) mounting plate. Then you’ll only need to find space for some speakers, although the aftermarket has a solution to this problem as well: Dedicated door-card-mounted speaker boxes are available at reasonable prices.

2. 

When the time comes to re-sell your Thar, you’ll be really glad that you fitted some tough seat covers to keep the standard upholstery in a good condition. Remember that the Thar sits quite high off the ground, so the seat cushion sides are subject to wear every time anyone gets in or out. And, while neat seat covers will protect the original trim, it will also feel rather more plush than the standard Indian-market-spec upholstery fitted in the factory.

 

3. Replacement front bumper

Improve your Thar’s off-road approach angle, give it a mean new look, and add functionality and extra protection in the bush, with an aftermarket replacement front bumper. These units are usually made of sturdy steel, and often feature recovery points and winch mounting bases as well. If you choose wisely, you’ll even score a storage spot for a high-lift jack and space to mount extra driving lights.

 

4. Aftermarket wheels and tyres

The tyres are the only contact patches between your Mahindra Thar and the rocks over which you’ll be scampering, so it makes sense to invest in some proper off-road rubber. And, while you’re at it, you may as well fit some aftermarket wheels to allow for wider tyres and give the Thar a serious shot of extra attitude at the same time. You’ll go further and look better while doing it, so this will certainly be a wise investment.
