The new A‑Class (hatch and sedan) is available in two variants — the A 200 and the A 250 Sport. Both models benefit from new engines which include a petrol and a diesel derivative. The A 200 is powered by a 1.33-litre unit which puts out maximum power of 120 kW and peak torque of 250 Nm of torque. The engine has been paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Claimed fuel consumption for the A 200 is 5.2 l/100 km.
The A 200d is powered by a 1.9-litre unit which generates 110 kW and 320 Nm of torque and has been paired with a 8-speed dual-clutch semi-automatic transmission. Claimed fuel consumption for the A 200d is 4.9 l/100 km.

New features in the engines include CAMTRONIC for the intake camshaft, and particulate filter as standard. The modern diesel and petrol engines also set standards in terms of performance, efficiency and emission control. SCR catalytic converters or petrol particulate filters are part of standard equipment. The model-specific cylinder shut-off is a further expression of the high technological standards.
There is a choice of suspension systems for the A-Class, depending on engine variant and driver preference. DYNAMIC SELECT is standard equipment and at the touch of a button, provides an individual driving experience in conjunction with the suspension with active damping control (optional).

Which engine is right for you?
Lots of people struggle with this decision. But the truth is that it really depends on what your priorities are and the type of driving you do. Diesel engines are usually more powerful than petrol engines, however, with the A-Class, despite the diesel engine being a bit bigger it puts out 10 kW less power. Diesel engines have higher torque which is good for towing and also gives a smoother drive. Not to mention, they’re more fuel-efficient than petrol, particularly out of town on long journeys.
On the other hand, the harshness, noise, and vibrations in diesel-driven cars are usually higher than that of a petrol-driven car. Also, the maintenance cost of diesel cars is greater. Petrol cars are generally quieter and cheaper to run on shorter journeys. When you visit a dealership for a test drive, ask them to test drive both engines and then decide from there.
