Which is the best variant of the GWM Tank 500?

The Tank 500 offers luxurious travel with seven seats and serious off-road capabilities. Which model should you get?

Buying a Car

The GWM Tank500 impressed us recently (read our review!) with its interior opulence, smooth ride, and off-road prowess. But if you're wondering which variant you should buy, we have news for you: There is currently only one model on offer in SA, and that is the GWM Tank 500 2.0T HEV Ultra Luxury 4x4, priced at R1 222 900.

We plan to bring a diesel model to SA, but we don't know when. We will update this article once this info becomes available.

What does your money buy you?

You can do a lot with R1 222 900 in South Africa's automotive marketplace, and here's what you'll get inside the Tank 500 HEV for your hard-earned cash:

1. Plenty of pulling power

This behemoth will make easy meat of that heavy trailer over Christmas.

As we mentioned, the Tank 500 HEV packs a punch under the hood with a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor. This dynamic duo delivers a combined output 255kW and a meaty 648Nm of torque. Unfortunately, you'll be sacrificing fuel efficiency for power, though—the hybrid system boasts a claimed fuel consumption of just 8.5 L/100km, but real-world figures are much higher.

Towing capacity is rated at 2 500 kg (braked).

2. Off-road skills for every terrain

Your off-roading dreams come true.

Whether you're navigating suburbia or venturing off the beaten path, the Tank 500 HEV handles it all. With its advanced 4x4 drivetrain, impressive 224mm ground clearance, and a wading depth of up to 800mm, it easily tackles challenging terrain. Retractable side steps simplify getting in and out for the vertically challenged.

3. Luxury fit for royalty

Comfort is a priority!

A haven of comfort and sophistication awaits occupants. The spacious cabin comfortably seats seven passengers in luxurious Nappa leather. The first-row seats are heated and ventilated.

The massaging seats up front are a true highlight, making long commutes much more bearable.

4. Tech at your fingertips

GWM hasn't skimped on technology, either

The Tank 500 HEV boasts a massive touchscreen infotainment system, a Harman infinity sound system, a crystal-clear digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display that keeps your eyes on the road.

5. Safety features galore

The Tank 500 HEV prioritises your safety with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. We've experienced better adaptive cruise control systems in other vehicles, however, and other safety features, such as transparent view, are handy to have!

So, if you're looking for a unique and powerful SUV, the GWM Tank 500 HEV deserves a test drive. Just ensure your petrol budget is sizeable.

Our top 4 alternatives to the Tank 500 include the Ford Everest, Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Prado, and Kia Sorento.
