What is the difference between a Dongfeng Box and BYD Dolphin?

Small electric cars are becoming quite popular in SA, and those manufacturers that currently offer a vehicle in this segment pretty much have the market to themselves.

The Dongfeng Box E3 430 and the BYD Dolphin Dynamic Standard Range are two of the most competitive entry-level electric hatchbacks on the market right now. While they share similar power outputs, they differ significantly in dimensions, range testing standards, and interior philosophy.

Both vehicles are 5-door hatchbacks, both have similar power outputs and are very close in price, but couldn't be any more different. Here is a breakdown of the key differences

Range & Efficiency

Don't let the 430 in Dongfeng's name fool you into thinking it has much more range than the BYD. The Box uses the CLTC (China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle), which is notoriously optimistic. BYD’s NEDC (410 km) or WLTP (340 km) figures are closer to real-world expectations. In practice, both cars will likely achieve roughly 300–330 km on a full charge in mixed conditions.

Size & Practicality

  • The BYD Dolphin is the larger vehicle overall. It has a longer wheelbase (2,700 mm vs 2,663 mm), which translates to more rear legroom. It feels more like a traditional C-segment hatchback.

  • The Dongfeng Box is more compact and city-focused but is slightly wider. It features frameless doors and flush door handles, giving it a more "boutique" or premium aesthetic compared to the more conventional Dolphin.

Performance & Driving

While both have 70 kW motors, the BYD offers slightly more torque (180 Nm vs 160 Nm). However, the Dongfeng Box is generally lighter, which allows it to feel a bit punchier off the line and reach 100 km/h nearly 2 seconds faster than the Dolphin Dynamic.

Interior & Tech

  • Dongfeng Box E3: Focuses on a mini-luxury feel. It features a massive 12.8-inch floating touchscreen, a 360-degree camera, and an interior often finished in soft-touch materials with quilted patterns. The front passenger seat can also fold completely flat to create a "lounge" mode.

  • BYD Dolphin Dynamic: Known for its "Ocean Aesthetics" design. Its party trick is the 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen that can switch between portrait and landscape modes. It also includes the highly regarded BYD Blade Battery, widely regarded as one of the safest battery designs in the industry.

Features

The "E3" is the flagship trim for the Box, meaning it comes loaded with Level 2 ADAS (Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, etc.). The "Dynamic" is the entry-level trim for the Dolphin, so while it is very safe, it lacks some of the luxury flourishes (like ventilated seats or larger wheels) found on the higher-spec "Premium" Dolphin or the flagship Box E3.

The Verdict

If you want a car that feels like a tech-forward gadget with frameless doors and a more premium cabin, the Dongfeng Box E3 wins. If you prefer a more established platform, a lower price, and the peace of mind of the Blade Battery, the BYD Dolphin is the safer bet.
