What is the cheapest Ford car?

While you will have ample choice if you are considering a used car within a lower budget, what if a new car is your only option? We've investigated the Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa's product offerings to bring a list of the cheapest vehicles they sell in each segment.

Buying a Car

Whether you are on the lookout for a small city car, a utilitarian bakkie, a bus to use as a shuttle or a performance car, Ford has a product to meet your requirements. However, what if one of your requirements is for your next vehicle to be as affordable as possible, well the American automaker do create cheaper derivatives to suit your pocket.

Below we have collated a list of Ford vehicles in each of the different segments. Hatch

The most affordable hatch offering from the American automaker comes in the form of a Ford Figo hatch in Ambiente guise. This particular derivative comes fitted with a 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder, petrol engine that produce 88 kW and 150 Nm of torque. Ford claims that this model should be able to return an average fuel consumption figure of 5.7 L / 100 km, ideal for the morning commute.

Sedan

Want to keep the compact design of a hatch but want a larger boot for the family's luggage? Then you might want to take a look at the Ford Figo sedan in Ambiente trim, the most affordable sedan in the line-up. The model comes with the same 1.5-litre engine as in the hatch model and as a result, returns the same performance and consumption figures. However, where the hatch only offers 256-litres of boot space, the sedan provides 445-litres.

Crossover

For those looking for added ground clearance and a higher seating position when to the hatch and sedan models, the Ford EcoSport might just tick all the boxes. The most affordable variant, 1.5 Ambiente, offers 91 kW and 150 Nm of torque and is claimed to be able to return an average fuel consumption figure of 6.4 L / 100 km. Although it provides for less luggage space than the Figo in sedan guise, 333-litres, the EcoSport does come fitted with an additional four airbags for a total of six units.

Single-cab

In the market for a basic, reliable but affordable workhorse bakkie? The Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi might just be what you are looking for. Under the bonnet feature a capable but frugal 2.2-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel motor coupled to a 5-speed manual transmission. Ford claims this model is good for 88 kW and 285 Nm of torque and should return an average fuel consumption figure of 6.5 L / 100 km.

Double-cab

The Ford Ranger 2.2TDCi double cab Hi-Rider offers an identical power- and drive-train system as found in the single-cab model, however, with the benefit of two additional seats for a total of five. Another area in which the Hi-Rider outperforms the single-cab variant is in ground clearance. While the single-cab derivative provides 135 mm, the Hi-Rider offer 237 mm.

SUV

One of the biggest vehicle segments globally is the SUV and if you want to get into one, Ford has a solution that shouldn't break the bank. On offer from the American manufacturer is the Ford Everest in 2.2TDCi XLS. Although the model comes with the same basic engine as fitted in the double-cab and single-cab bakkies, Ford has managed to squeeze out more power and torque, rated at 118 kW and 385 Nm.

Bus

In the business of transporting people or just looking for more seats for the family? Why not take a look at the Ford Tourneo Custom 2.2TDCi LWB in Ambiente trim. This particular variant comes with no less than eight seats and a large boot for luggage and to carry it all is a 2.2-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel motor coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission developing 74 kW and 310 Nm of torque.

Panel-van

Don't need many seats but need a lot of space? The Ford Transit Custom panel van might just meet your requirements. This model boasts a staggering 6830-litres of luggage space, ample for most business needs. To pull all that luggage is a 2.2-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder diesel motor coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission developing 92 kW and 350 Nm of torque and with a claimed average fuel consumption return of 7.3 L / 100 km.

Coupé

Are you one of those fortunate few that is on the lookout for a fun coupé or rather, in this case, a fastback model? Why not consider one of the best-selling sportscars globally, the Ford Mustang 5.0 GT fastback? Although the model retains much of the classic character associated with the classics, it does come with modern amenities as well as safety features and a 5.0-litre, V8 petrol motor producing 331 kW and 529 Nm of torque.

Cabriolet

Looking for the same performance as you would find in the Ford Mustang 5.0 GT fastback but want to feel the wind in your hair? Well, Ford does produce the Mustang 5.0 GT in a convertible configuration. As you would expect, it features the same 10-speed automatic transmission, however, retains two fewer airbags due to the design, for a total of five units.
