Is a Ford Ranger expensive to maintain?

We compare the Ford Ranger in both single and double cab guise with two key competitors to determine whether this locally produced bakkie is expensive to maintain.

Buying a Car

As one of South Africa's best-selling vehicles and indeed, the most popular pre-owned vehicle on the AutoTrader website, Ford's Ranger is an important product for the American brand. Are these bakkies expensive to maintain, though?

It is impossible to work out exactly how much a vehicle will be to maintain since labour costs vary, however, we can work out how much the parts will cost and then compare the total price of the parts basket with key competitors to determine how expensive the Ranger is to maintain. It is important to note that a service plan is optional, and will affect the cost of maintaining the product, with a 6-year/90 000km plan taking care of basic servicing.

We consulted the most recent . This handy pricing guide features vehicles from various segments, but for our purposes today we will be focussing on the single and double cab bakkies, comparing the Ranger with two other locally produced models, namely the Toyota Hilux and the Nissan Navara.

For our purposes today, we will be adding up the service parts costs with the maintenance parts costs and then also using the total value of the service parts, the maintenance parts and the body parts as a percentage of the total cost of the vehicle.

Single-cab bakkies (Entry-level)

Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi

Nissan Navara 2.5 SE

Toyota Hilux 2.4 GDS

R 30 811.51

Parts Basket as % of New Car Price(service, maintenance and body parts)

 24.91%

53.56%

26.15 %

As we can see, the Ranger well and truly beats the Navara and Hilux when it comes to the cost of its service and maintenance parts, however, the Hilux claws back some ground, offering a lower body part cost, leaving the overall cost of its parts basket as very similar to the Ranger. The Navara is comfortably the most expensive of the trio, with a 53.56% parts basket as a percentage of its retail price.

Double-cab bakkies (4x2)

Nissan Navara 2.5DDTi LE AT

Toyota Hilux 2.8 Raider AT

R 28 724.68

Parts Basket as % of New Car Price(service, maintenance and body parts)

13.64%

43.78%

15.32%

In the double-cab segment, the Ford Ranger is victorious again, with an impressive service and maintenance parts basket price. The Toyota Hilux is a close second, with a total parts basket that totals 15.33% of the vehicle's list price. The Navara, in double-cab guise appears to have a more competitively priced parts basket, but it is still far costlier than both the Ranger and the Hilux.

Verdict

Having looked at the figures, we can say with certainty that the Ford Ranger is not expensive to maintain. According to the data in the AA Spare Parts Pricing guide, the Ranger is the most affordable among its competitors in both single and double cab variants.
