This week we spoke to Hilmar Rencken Dealer Principal from Park Ford in Vanderbijlpark to get his 5 top tips for anyone looking to buy a new car.
1. When is the best time to buy a new car?
"Certain manufacturers work on quarterly cycles, so I recommend buying used cars at the end of the quarter. This is because some manufacturers are more inclined to give better deals during this time, as they are looking for market share", said Hilmar.
2. Should a customer haggle the price?
“If a customer is enquiring on a car where the instalment has already been advertised, then there’s probably less leeway to be able to haggle about the price.
I think there is definitely no harm in customers at least asking: ‘Is that the best price you can do for me?’”

3. What’s cheaper diesel or petrol?
“Generally speaking diesels tend to be lighter on fuel, but you need to look at where in the life-cycle the vehicle is. You tend to have earlier maintenance on diesel vehicles compared to petrol.
So if it's a fairly low mileage vehicle, it's definitely worth considering the diesel because of the fuel consumption, but if it starts getting higher mileage, then a petrol one would probably be better because you'll definitely have less maintenance than on the diesel”.

4. Is it true that it’s cheaper to buy a car with cash?
“It differs from new to used, but in general no, you will not necessarily get a better deal with cash. Dealers get a rebate on the financing from the finance house. Certain offers, especially on new vehicles are linked to financing, in our case, through a specific bank”.
5. Should you buy any optional extras for your new car?
“In my opinion, optional extras should be based on whether you need those extras for a specific purpose. If the extras are functional, and you need them for your lifestyle, then I would say go for it. However, you do need to be aware that although you pay for these extras, you won't get a lot back for them on trade-in or resale.
So I would take this into consideration ahead of choosing any optional extras for your new car.”
