The South African automotive market is relatively unique from a sale perspective, with our respective top 5 best-selling models not necessarily being mirrored by any other market. Let's have a look at the best-selling vehicle in SA, while also taking a look at the four models trying to catch the market sales leader! Since bakkies form part of the light commercial vehicle segment and often out-sell passenger cars locally, we have separated the best-sellers by passenger and light commercial using figures obtained from the automotive business council NAAMSA from February 2023.
Who is on top?
Passenger car
The best-selling passenger car in February 2023 was the locally-produced Toyota Corolla Cross with 1 683 units sold!
Who is chasing the Corolla Cross?
In second position with 1 513 sales is the Volkswagen Polo Vivo, followed by the Suzuki Swift with 1 367 units, then the Toyota Starlet with 1 311 sales and then the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro with 962 units sold.
Light commercial vehicle
It is no surprise to note that the Toyota Hilux, with 3 335 unit sales in February 2023, was the best-selling light commercial vehicle.
Who is chasing the Hilux?
The Hilux has strong competition from the likes of the Ford Ranger which registered 1 806 sales, followed by the Isuzu D-Max with 1 747 sales, the Nissan NP200 with 1 292 units and then the Mahindra Scorpio Pik-Up, with 844 units.
