If you have ever read or watched a car review or even been through the process of buying or selling a car, you will have heard the term "trim level" bandied about. What is a trim level, you may ask. Well, this means the different levels of fitment a car has, referring to body, interior, drive options and electronics. The terms, option, variant, grade walk and spec are all used interchangeably to refer to these different levels.

In the past, automotive manufacturers would offer up a base model vehicle which could be optioned with various extras that could be added by the manufacturer so that the customer could customise their vehicle at sale. Due to optioned vehicles often losing their value at resale because of the options specified on the vehicle not being to the tastes of the next buyer, manufacturers began offering fewer options and rather offering up certain trim levels that would suit everyone's tastes.
It is not very often that you now find a vehicle with options as these features are now part of grade walk packages or "trim levels"

What is base trim?
A base trim model is the entry-level offering. These vehicles are often devoid of many of the speciality features and are offered because a subset of buyers does not crave features in a car that is seen as an appliance. You will most often run into these base trim models at car rental companies or anywhere where the vehicle in question is a business tool or budget is the only buying prerequisite.

As mentioned earlier, a base trim model will very often have little in the way of styling, attractiveness or comfort, as one moves up the trim level offerings, the manufacturer will offer more exterior styling, better comfort interior wise and a higher level of electronics until the top spec is achieved. Very often, the engine and transmission offerings get better with the spec level change, often only being available in the higher-end offerings. many of the items a manufacturer will change with trim levels could be as follows:

Which trim level is best for me?
This can be seen as a double-edged sword, as choosing the right spec or trim level for you is part and parcel of buying the right car for you. You may have high-end tastes but only the budget for an entry-level model. Buying with one's head and not heart is always the best practice and even though you have your heart set on that full Modena leather interior with sunroof and full driver assistance package, you may only be able to afford the model with cloth seats and no auto climate control.
