Volkswagen Polo GTI vs BYD Dolphin EV: Which costs less to own in South Africa?

You're standing in a showroom, torn between the familiar thrill of a Polo GTI and the promise of electric savings from a BYD Dolphin. But which one will actually cost you less money in the long run?

With petrol hovering above R21 per litre and electricity costs climbing, every rand counts when buying a car in South Africa. But which of these similarly-priced hatchbacks will cost you less to own over five years?

The BYD Dolphin Premium Extended Range costs R599 900, while the Polo GTI costs R585 800. That's a R14 100 difference in favour of the German hatchback.

Both cars pack a similar punch. The Dolphin has 150 kW versus the Polo's 147kW, though the GTI gets to 100km/h quicker at 6.7 seconds. The Polo will hit 238 km/h if you're brave (or silly) enough, while the Dolphin tops out at 159 km/h, which dampens the fun factor somewhat, and we're also thinking of the trucks on the N1 that you'll need to overtake.

The Dolphin comes loaded with a kit that costs extra for the Polo. We're talking a panoramic sunroof, surround-view cameras, adaptive cruise control, and keyless entry as standard. Option a Polo GTI to match, and you'll see that price go skyward fast.

Fuel vs energy

This is where electric vehicles either win big or disappoint spectacularly, depending on how you charge them. But first, let's talk about how the Polo GTI drinks in the real world.

Volkswagen claims 6.4 L/100km for the GTI, but that's unrealistic. During our week of testing, we saw 8.2 L/100km. And that's driving fairly sensibly. You'll easily crack 9.0 L/100km if your right foot is heavy.

At 8.2 L/100km and R21.51 per litre, the Polo costs R176.38 for every 100 kilometres you drive. Over 20 000km annually, that's R35 276 in fuel costs.

Now here's where owner experience trumps manufacturer claims. BYD says the Dolphin uses only 14.17kWh per 100km, but according to owners, expect around 15.5kWh per 100km in mixed South African driving conditions, which includes summer air conditioning, winter heating, and the usual stop-start traffic.

At home charging rates of R3.48 per kWh, that works out to R53.94 per 100km, or R10,788 annually for the same distance.

The difference is staggering. You'll save R122.44 for every 100km driven, or R24,488 annually. Put another way, the Polo's thirst means you're paying an extra R2,041 monthly to keep it going.

Over five years, that's R122 442 you keep in your pocket. Even if electricity prices climb 30% over that period, you're still massively ahead!

Insurance: the electric premium is real

The Polo GTI will cost about R1 500 per month for comprehensive cover, while the Dolphin pushes that to R1 650.

Insurers cite two main reasons: parts are more expensive for EVs, and there aren't as many qualified technicians to fix them yet. It's not a dealbreaker, but budget an extra R1 800 per year for driving electric.

Maintenance: simplicity wins

Electric motors are beautifully simple machines. They do not require oil changes, spark plugs, timing belts, or complex turbocharger servicing. The Dolphin needs attention every 20 000 km, and BYD offers a comprehensive 5-year maintenance plan that covers most service requirements.

The Polo GTI, a proper performance car with a sophisticated turbocharged engine, needs more frequent care. According to current dealer pricing, for a service every 15 000km, you'll pay around R4 000 per visit. That works out to R5 333 annually* versus an estimated R1 300 for the Dolphin, though exact BYD service pricing in South Africa isn't widely published yet. Bear in mind that the

*Polo's first three years of servicing or 45 000km is covered under a service plan, while a 4-year/120 000 warranty is also standard.

The maintenance advantage goes beyond just cost. EVs require about 40% less maintenance overall due to fewer moving parts, reduced brake wear thanks to regenerative braking, and the absence of complex engine systems that can fail. Both cars will be heavy on tyres because they produce a relatively high power and torque.

Depreciation: the great unknown vs guaranteed value retention

The problem with the Dolphin is that it's so new. BYD only launched it in May 2024, so we're working with limited depreciation data.

Looking at 2024 Dolphins on AutoTrader, cars that sold new for R599 900 are now traded between R400 000 and R519 000. That suggests around 23% depreciation in the first 10 months, which projects to roughly 28% in the first year.

A 2023 Polo GTI model that cost around R570 000 new is worth about R475 000 today. That's 16.7% over two years, or roughly 8.3% annually.

The Dolphin will likely lose R75 740 more in value over five years than the Polo GTI. New brands always suffer in the resale stakes, and electric vehicles from unfamiliar manufacturers face an even steeper hill, despite BYD being massive in other markets.

The bigger picture

When you add everything up over five years and 100 000km of driving, here's what the real costs look like:

The Polo GTI will cost you R878 847 all-in. That includes the purchase price, fuel, insurance, and maintenance, but excludes depreciation since you might keep the car longer.

The Dolphin totals R759 340 over the same period.

Despite its steeper depreciation and higher insurance costs, the Dolphin saves you R119 507 over five years. That's R23 901 per year, or R2 227 per month.

The break-even point comes after just 6.3 months of ownership. After that, every month you drive the Dolphin instead of the Polo GTI, you're more than R2000 better off.

Charging in a perfect world

Of course, this all assumes you can reliably charge at home. If you rely heavily on public charging at R6 to R8 per kWh, the savings shrink but remain substantial. Even at R6 per kWh for all your charging, you'd save R16,848 annually compared to the thirstier GTI.

The Dolphin's real-world range of around 390 - 410 km comfortably covers most daily driving. The Polo's realistic range of 488 - 500 km gives you more flexibility for long trips, though both cars fall short of their claimed ranges in real-world conditions.

Then, you should also factor in EV road trip costs. Stopping at a public charger usually results in having a meal while you wait for your EV to charge, as we discovered when we drove to Bloemfontein from Cape Town and back in the Volvo EX30. We are not including these costs in this article, but it is something to keep in mind, especially if you must feed the whole family.


Which car should you choose? BYD Dolphin or VW Polo GTI?

The Dolphin makes profound financial sense if you're purely cost-conscious and drive typical distances with access to reliable home charging. The savings alone are staggering when you factor in real-world energy consumption figures from actual owners. You get home, plug in your car, and leave it to charge overnight like your phone.

Choose the Polo GTI if you prioritise driving dynamics, need maximum range flexibility, or can't guarantee regular home charging access. It's also the safer bet from a resale perspective, though you'll pay dearly for that safety through fuel costs.

The Polo GTI's extra 1.8 L/100km over its claimed figure adds R7 744 annually to your fuel bill. Factor in the maintenance costs of R5 333 per year after the 3-year service plan, and the electric alternative becomes impossible to ignore.

The BYD Seagull/Dolphin Mini, known in SA as the BYD Atto 1, was awarded the title of 2025 World Urban Car in the 2025 World Car Awards held at the New York International Auto Show, surpassing 11 other elite contenders from across the globe.

When it launches in South Africa (hopefully by September 2025), it will be the cheapest EV in the country, with an estimated price tag of R350 000 to R400 000.
