The Mercedes-Benz GLA doesn't come cheap, but for those who can afford it, it makes a compelling option. Here's why.

If you have the money to spend on a luxury compact crossover that combines style, innovation, and efficiency, the Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d AMG Line (with a price of R990 943 without options) is hard to ignore. Having spent time behind the wheel of this popular German crossover, here are my top 5 reasons to fall for the GLA 200d.  (Read my GLA review here.)

1. That sexy, coupé-inspired design

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 200d radiates a tasteful blend of style and sportiness from every angle. The AMG Line trim enhances its dynamic look with clean, sweeping lines. Up front, the AMG-specific grille, chrome accents, and angular LED headlights create a bold yet refined impression. The coupe-inspired roofline and the standard 19-inch alloys, with optional 20-inch upgrades, further emphasise its sporty appeal. At the rear, LED taillights and discreet AMG branding complete a design that feels effortlessly modern and well-proportioned. It’s a car that quietly turns heads with its composed elegance.

2. Intelligent multi-beam LED headlights

Driving at night or in adverse conditions is effortless in the GLA 200d AMG Line, thanks to the optional Multibeam LED Intelligent Lighting System. These adaptive headlights actively adjust their beam patterns based on the environmental conditions and oncoming traffic. The system ensures maximum road illumination without dazzling other drivers, ideal for long-distance night-time journeys.

While these headlights are an optional feature in the model, they feel indispensable for those prioritising safety and visibility. For someone who suffers from night blindness, this is the best invention ever. See it in action here.

3. Interior comfort par excellence

The interior is mindfully crafted, blending partial suede cloth and artificial leather upholstery with intricate stitching that exudes premium sophistication. The sports seats are supportive yet comfortable, ensuring long drives are a breeze. Add to that the optional panoramic sunroof, and you’ve got a cabin that feels airy and inviting.

Technology is also at the forefront, with dual MBUX infotainment displays that boast crystal-clear resolution and intuitive touch control. The digital climate control system ensures the perfect cabin temperature for added convenience.

(The big wheels are a little hard over speed bumps; I would spec the standard wheels in this instance.)

4. A killer sound system

For audio enthusiasts, Mercedes offers an optional Burmester® surround sound system, which elevates the auditory experience to world-class levels. Our test model was fitted with this luxury specification, and the teenagers couldn't stop arguing over whose playlist gets played.

With a high-quality sound system that brings your music to life with crisp highs and deep bass, the audio experience in the cabin is sublime. The clarity provided ensures that every note is delivered with precision.

5. Diesel efficiency with mild-hybrid tech

With an average fuel consumption of just 5.6 L/100km,  the GLA's 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine may be one of the most frugal luxury crossovers in its segment.

The mild-hybrid system provides short bursts of additional power when needed, enhancing acceleration while helping to keep consumption impressively low. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or spending time in traffic, your diesel goes a long way in the GLA 200d.
