The Alfa Romeo Stelvio was first introduced to the local market in 2019 and is a breakaway from the vehicle's expected from the marque. It is the first SUV to be produced by the Italian firm and can hold its own against its direct competitors in this ever-growing segment. However, if you are in the market for a new model, you are limited to only two variants, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Super Q4 and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio Q4. Let us take a look at the top three things you need to know about this model.
1. Drivetrain
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio Super Q4 comes fitted with a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder petrol engine. Coupled with the 8-speed automatic transmission, customers can expect performance figures of 206 kW and 400 Nm of torque. This enough to propel the vehicle to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 230 km/h. When driven normally, Alfa Romeo claims the combined average fuel consumption return to be 7.0 L / 100 km.
While the Stelvio Super Q4 is not slow, the Quadrifoglio Q4 takes it up a notch in terms of performance. Under the bonnet, you will find a Ferrari derived 2.9-litre, turbocharged, V6 petrol motor mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The combination will produce 375 kW and 600 Nm of torque which results in a 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 283 km/h. The larger engine does come with a compromise and it is found in the frugality as it returns a claimed combined average fuel consumption figure of 9.8 L / 100 km.
2. Size and weight
Alfa Romeo has gone out of their way to ensure the Stelvio is as light as possible. Why is weight so important? Well not only does it impact the vehicle's performance and frugality but also its driving dynamics, a lighter car will be easier to pilot through the corners. Not only has Alfa Romeo utilized aluminium on a variety of components and panels but have even resorted to carbon fibre.
One such carbon item is the driveshaft, used even on the Stelvio Super Q4, not just the performance model. The weight saving has allowed the Italian marque to build a vehicle measuring 4687mm in length, in the case of the Super Q4 variant, and 4702mm for the Quadrifoglio derivative. Both derivatives measure 2163mm wide while the Quadrifoglio stand 10mm taller than the Super Q4 which is 1671mm high.
These measurements translate to ample legroom and headroom for both the front and rear occupants while offering a 525-litre boot. This can be expanded to 1600-litres if the rear bench is folded flat.
3. Warranty and maintenance
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio range is sold with a 5-year / 100 000 km warranty. This will give the owner peace of mind should any of the covered components fail during this time.
