Although the Hilux range is one of the best-selling locally for Toyota, the Japanese automaker is well known for its hatchback models. Currently, if you are in the market for a mid-sized hatchback from Toyota, you will be looking at the Corolla hatch. However, it was not always called that, previously this segment contender went by the name Auris and before that, it was the RunX.
The Auris model range was very successful in South Africa, and we have found quite a few variants for you to choose from ranging from the entry-trim specification all the way through to the more sporty TRD derivative of the earlier models.
1. Toyota Auris X
The Toyota Auris in X guise is the entry-trim of the range, however, shouldn't be overlooked as it might just give you the most bang for your buck.
2. Toyota Auris Xi
The Toyota Auris Xi is next in the line-up and not only see items such as alloy wheels fitted but also comes with a more powerful 1.6-litre engine.
3. Toyota Auris Xs
Next up is the Xs derivatives. While it retains the 1.6-litre engine, this model comes with a more powerful infotainment system as well as an improved trim level.
4. Toyota Auris Xr
The Toyota Auris in Xr guise will get just about everything you want in a hatchback. Not only does it offer exceptionally high trim levels, it is also available with either a manual transmission or a CVT.
5. Toyota Auris Xd
Is your heart set on a diesel vehicle? Well, Toyota did produce diesel variants of the first-generation Auris models, so if you are not too worried about the age of the vehicle, the Toyota Auris Xd should satisfy your needs.
6. Toyota Auris RT
Once again, if you don't mind owning the first generation Auris, the RT derivative will offer good value for money. While not as well specified as the RS and RX models, the RT should do well for the daily commute.
7. Toyota Auris RS
The Toyota Auris RS offers more standard specifications than the RT and will make for a more comfortable vehicle to use on a daily basis. Ideal option for those looking for a well-specified yet affordable option.
8. Toyota Auris TRD
Whether you are looking for a more dynamic driving feel, performance or collectability, the Toyota Auris TRD will tick all three of those boxes. The first-generation model offers improved trim on the interior as well as more aggressive styling cues on the exterior.
