Even though the Toyota Corolla has been a strong seller in South Africa for decades, its hatchback counterpart, the Auris, simply wasn’t very popular in our market. Consequently, this model has become very good used value since its discontinuation, so if you’re interested in buying one, you’ll want to know about the top 4 safety features on a Toyota Auris.
Despite frequent updates and restyles, the Toyota Auris never really made much of an impression in our marketplace. Perhaps that’s why Toyota decided to revert to the Corolla nameplate for this model’s successor – some added brand equity could only do this hatchback some good. But, even though its name didn’t ring many bells, its safety credentials were quite solid for its era.

1. Plenty of airbags
Initially launched with a variety of engines and trim levels, the Auris range was later trimmed and simplified. But, no matter which Auris you choose, it will have at least 4 airbags – two frontal airbags, and two side airbags. High-trim (Xr and Hybrid) variants upped this count to 7 airbags, through the addition of side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.
2. ABS with EBD and BAS
While the Auris spec sheet was strangely devoid of any mention of stability- or traction control, this has to be seen in the context of its era and market positioning: between 2013 and 2018, very few cars in this class offered standard stability control. Never mind that, though – no Auris has ever been powerful enough to really justify traction control, anyway. The brakes are up to standard, however, with 4-channel ABS incorporating Brake Assist (BAS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) standard across the range.
3. ISOFIX child seat anchors
This is an important consideration for family-car buyers, so it’s good to know that all Auris variants were fitted with two ISOFIX child seat anchors for the rear seats. ISOFIX seating provides standardised mounting points for child seats, taking the guesswork out of fitting these life-saving perches for your little ones.
4. Excellent crash test ratings
When Euro NCAP tested the last-generation Auris in 2013, it received a full 5-star rating, with adult occupant protection rated at 92% and child occupant protection rated at 84%. It should however be remembered that this result is according an older test protocol, and reflect the ratings of an Auris with the full complement of 7 airbags and stability control. The lack of the latter item would cost the local Auris one star, but those occupant protection scores still apply to all higher-trim (all Xr and 2016-on Xi and Xs) Auris variants.
