When looking to modernise an automotive icon, Land Rover faced a tough task with the new Defender. The two clear paths the brand could have chosen were to create a modern interpretation of the classic Defender, but with added modern convenience, or to completely revolutionise the product while maintaining loose nods to the older model. The brand opted for the latter, while Welsh-built brand Ineos appears to have gone for the former with its Grenadier.

The modern Defender, like its forebear, is available in three body styles, namely the 90, 110 and 130, referring to the wheelbase length in inches, even though the 90's is actually 93-inches, and the 110 and 130 have 119-inch wheelbase, with different lengthy bodies. Because there are so many Defenders to choose from, we have chosen 5 very different alternatives to the Land Rover in this article.
