There are some interesting vehicles popping out of the BYD kraal. Recently, the Atto 8 made a strong statement for 7-seater SUVs, the Dolphin Surf for affordable electric mobility, and now they have played their next plug-in-hybrid card: the Atto 2. Here's what's great and not-so-great about the Atto 2.

Pro - South Africa's cheapest plug-in hybrid?
The starting price for the Atto 2 is R449 900 at the time of writing, making it South Africa's currently cheapest plug-in hybrid vehicle. The only other hybrid vehicles available in this range are self-charging hybrids.
Con - It looks...average
The Atto 2 isn't a bad-looking vehicle on the outside, but it doesn't really stand out either. It's a safe bet on the styling front.
Pro - 930km of range
BYD's DM-i system (Dual Mode Intelligent) is their premier hybrid system. It cleverly maximises efficiency to get the best possible range. The fuel tank capacity is 45 litres, and the battery capacity is 7.8 kWh. The combustion component is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, with a total power output of 122kW / 300Nm. The Atto 2 can travel 40km on full EV mode, and the combined range is just short of 1000km. Claimed fuel consumption is rated at 5.1L /100km
Con - Stiff competition
There is significant competition for the Atto 2, while its trump cards are its exceptional range, fuel efficiency, and well-appointed interior. Other competitors offer more space, 4x4 capability, and more. The Atto 2 is in a saturated segment.
Pro - Well appointed interior
Just because it's affordable doesn't mean it has a cheap interior. The Atto 2 is very nicely trimmed and comes equipped with the latest and greatest technology.
Con - No DC charging
Unfortunately, the Atto 2 only supports AC charging. Though the battery is small, the maximum AC charging power ranges from 3.3 kW to 6.6 kW, depending on the variant you choose.
