Launched locally on 11 June 2026, the BYD Atto 2 DM-i is the country's most affordable PHEV. The range-topping Dynamic derivative, priced at R489,900, promises genuine value in an increasingly competitive compact SUV segment. The starting price of only R449,900 makes the BYD Atto 2 DM-i the cheapest plug-in hybrid electric vehicle on sale today.

Styling

At 4,330 mm long, the Atto 2 DM-i is a tidy, modern compact crossover. Highlights include full-LED headlights, a full-width rear LED light bar with BYD's signature "Chinese Knot" detailing, and a floating roof design. The deliberately small grille signals its hybrid nature. 16-inch anthracite alloys and aluminium roof rails complete the Dynamic's exterior. Neat rather than dramatic.

Interior and Tech

The cabin is a genuine highlight. A 12.8-inch touchscreen and 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster dominate the dash, backed by wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, a 50W wireless charger, and four USB-C ports. PU leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces, and tight panel gaps make it feel premium for the price. Boot space is a practical 425 litres (1,335 L with seats folded). The Dynamic's ADAS suite, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, lane-keep assist, AEB, and a 360-degree camera, is class-leading at this price point.

Powertrain

The DM-i Super Hybrid pairs a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and 7.85 kWh LFP Blade Battery, delivering 122 kW and 300 Nm to the front wheels via an e-CVT. The 0–100 km/h sprint takes 9.1 seconds, with a top speed of 180 km/h.

Fuel Economy and Range

BYD claims 5.1 L/100 km combined and a pure electric range of ~40 km - enough for most daily commutes. With a 45-litre tank and full charge, total range reaches 930 km, making long-distance South African travel stress-free. Charging is via a 3.3 kW AC Type-2 port; no DC fast-charging is available. On our test route, we were comfortably achieving 5.8 L/100km while putting the drivetrain through its paces.

Driving Impressions

In everyday use, the Atto 2 DM-i is smooth, quiet, and comfortable — the supple ride is particularly well-suited to South African roads. The electric motor delivers strong, immediate pull for city driving and confident overtaking. Under hard acceleration, the transition between drive modes can feel slightly hesitant, but it's a minor gripe. This is a composed, practical commuter, not a performance machine.

Verdict

The Atto 2 DM-i Dynamic is a well-rounded, sensibly priced PHEV with a strong warranty and genuine daily usability. For buyers ready to embrace electrification without committing to a full BEV, it's hard to beat at under R500,000.
