Hilux still dominates, but Mahindra has cracked the top 4, and GWM is climbing fast. We crunched the NAAMSA numbers; here's who South Africans are actually buying in 2026, as per the latest figures!

SA's favourite bakkies: Who's winning (so far!) in 2026?

The bakkie wars are raging. Four months into 2026, and the sales figures tell a fascinating story, one where old champions are being pushed harder than ever, and unexpected challengers are muscling their way onto the podium.

Updated Ford Ranger driven in SA (May '26)

We've analysed NAAMSA sales data from January through April to reveal which bakkies South Africans are spending their money on. While the top spot might not come as a surprise, the movements beneath show just how much this market is shifting.

Top 5 best-selling bakkies in SA (January to April 2026)

1. Toyota Hilux – 12,910 Units

Monthly breakdown: Jan 2,475 | Feb 3,362 | Mar 4,118 | Apr 2,955

The Hilux is dominating, with a commanding 31% share of the top five. March delivered the eighth-generation model's strongest performance this year at 4,118 units, before April saw a slight pullback. That dip isn't a weakness, though; it's anticipation. With the ninth-generation Hilux set to launch later in 2026, some buyers are clearly playing the waiting game.

South Africans trust the Hilux because it delivers on every front. Resale value that barely depreciates. A dealer network that reaches every corner of the country. And a reputation for reliability that's been earned over decades, not marketing campaigns.

2. Ford Ranger – 8,249 Units

Monthly breakdown: Jan 2,071 | Feb 2,091 | Mar 2,074 | Apr 2,013

Consistency matters, and the Ranger delivers it. Four months of sales hovering around 2,000 units each month prove this Silverton-built bakkie has found its audience, and that audience isn't budging.

The Ranger appeals to a specific buyer: someone who wants their bakkie to feel more like a premium SUV than a workhorse. Large touchscreens, quality materials, and that smooth 10-speed automatic transmission make the daily commute feel less like a chore. Ford South Africa has recently updated the Ranger lineup for 2026, introducing a significant powertrain shift: the 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine joins the range, and expanded V6 diesel availability. The new Sport derivative now bridges the gap between XLT and Wildtrak models.

The Ranger is the most-searched used car on AutoTrader, and as a new model, it outsells the Hilux in double-cab configuration.

3. Isuzu D-Max – 7,335 Units

Monthly breakdown: Jan 1,331 | Feb 1,951 | Mar 3,008 | Apr 1,045

If any bakkie had a dramatic first quarter, it's the D-Max. January's modest 1,331 units exploded to 3,008 in March, enough to briefly leapfrog the Ranger into second place. Then came April's sharp drop to 1,045 units.

What happened? The market's waiting. Word of a facelifted D-Max arriving soon has buyers pausing, and that March spike likely represented fleet orders and buyers who couldn't wait any longer.

The D-Max doesn't win on glamour; it wins on proving itself in the toughest conditions.

4. Mahindra Scorpio Pik Up – 3,356 Units

Monthly breakdown: Jan 753 | Feb 1,003 | Mar 1,037 | Apr 563

Mahindra started January quietly with just 753 units, but February and March saw the Scorpio Pik Up break the 1,000-unit barrier. While April's 563 units represent a dip, the year-to-date performance proves South African buyers are willing to look beyond traditional badges when the value proposition stacks up.

Price matters, especially when skyrocketing fuel costs stretch household budgets thin. For buyers who need capability but can't justify premium pricing, Mahindra has become the sensible choice.

Interestingly, in January, the Scorpio Pik Up actually ranked fourth overall, with the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 briefly claiming fifth spot with 484 units. But over the four-month period, Mahindra's consistency has earned it a place in the top five.

5. GWM P-Series – 2,393 Units

The GWM P300 is proving to be a local favourite.

Monthly breakdown: Jan 461 | Feb 559 | Mar 785 | Apr 588

Rounding out the top five is South Africa's best-selling imported bakkie, a title that would've seemed impossible for a Chinese manufacturer just a few years ago. The P-Series (combining both P300 and P500 models) had a slower January start at 461 units (ranking sixth that month), but steady growth through February and a March peak of 785 units cemented its position in the top five for the year-to-date period.

GWM cracked a crucial code: offer luxury-level features at mid-range pricing. Buyers who want a lifestyle bakkie but baulk at Ranger money have found their answer. Leather, tech, and comfort without the premium badge price, it's a formula that's clearly working.

What's coming next

We recently spotted the upcoming double-cab bakkie from Chery while visiting the Longhan testing track in Wuhu, China. Engineers mentioned that the Himla may not be coming to SA at all, as we once thought, but this new bruiser below, still under its codename, the KP31, will definitely be gracing our roads. It will be SA's first plug-in hybrid diesel-electric bakkie.

Codenamed the KP31, the upcoming Chery bakkie is going to be a major disruptor.

The rest of 2026 promises to shake things up even further. The ninth-generation Toyota Hilux will arrive shortly, potentially resetting buyer expectations entirely. The facelifted Isuzu D-Max will give existing fans a reason to upgrade. And the real game-changer? Models like the Chery KP31 plug-in hybrid diesel bakkie set to arrive in Q4.

Here's what else local buyers can look forward to in 2026:

• Volkswagen Amarok Walkinshaw W600
• JMC Grand Avenue
• Mitsubishi Triton (new twin-turbo 2.4 diesel)
• GWM P500 (new 3.0-litre turbodiesel)
• JAC T9 (PHEV powertrain)
• JAC T8 (new entry-level Comfort trim)

With fuel prices climbing relentlessly, the value proposition of hybrid bakkies could fundamentally alter what South Africans expect from their one-tonners.

Ford has also just confirmed the Ranger Super Duty for South Africa, set to arrive in 2027 with enhanced towing capability (4.5 tonnes), improved payload, and serious off-road credentials aimed at agriculture, mining, and emergency services.
