Renault has been quietly dominating the small vehcile segment with the likes of the Kwid, Triber, Kiger, and Duster models, and will soon be entering the higher end of the segments with updates to the Triber and Duster, and will soon introduce new models to compete in higher-end segments. Until that happens, though, they will rely on the introduction of a new model derivative, a passenger version of their popular Trafic van.

The 2026 Renault Trafic Passenger drops the commercial workhorse act to take a direct swing at established rivals in the segment, like the Volkswagen Transporter and Toyota Quantum. For growing families or executive shuttle operators seeking SUV-level refinement in a spacious people-mover, the Techno+ makes a seriously compelling case. We spent the day with the new market entrant, and here is what we found.

Styling
The Renault Trafic Passenger Techno+ balances the functionality of a high-capacity multi-purpose vehicle with the refined, automotive styling of a modern passenger SUV. Rather than looking like a standard commercial shuttle, the Techno+ trim features high-end exterior accents, body-coloured elements, and a car-like interior. The exterior design focuses on clean lines, a wider stance, and visual touches that set it apart from other MPVs. The front end features a horizontal bonnet line paired with an upright front grille adorned with chrome horizontal slats and high-gloss black accents. There is a set of full-LED headlights with Renault’s signature C-shaped LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) and integrated LED front fog lights, giving it an unmistakable road presence.
It comes with fully body-coloured front bumpers, exterior mirror caps, side protective mouldings, slide-door rails, and rear light pillars. It is fitted with 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and includes extra-tinted privacy glass across the rear sliding doors, side quarter panels, and rear tailgate for improved privacy and UV protection.
Interior
Inside, the cabin shifts away from utility-van territory toward a modern, ergonomic passenger car aesthetic. You get a continuous horizontal dashboard band that stretches across the entire width of the cabin. It features soft-touch geometric graining complemented by satin-chrome trim around the air vents, climate dials, and instrument cluster. It is equipped with a leather-lined steering wheel with integrated multifunction controls, matching gear selector trim, and upgraded aftermarket dark fabric seat upholstery with decorative stitching.
It has a flexible seating configuration that supports up to 9 passengers (3, 6, or 9 seats), and with the modular seating system, it allows up to 5.7 m³ (6,000 litres) of total loading volume. Centre-stage is a floating integrated touchscreen multimedia infotainment cluster featuring an 8.0-inch EasyLink touchscreen display, paired with a 4.2-inch colour TFT driver information screen in the instrument binnacle. You get full LED interior lighting across all rows, which creates a clean, warm ambient illumination during night drives. Rear passengers get dedicated rear climate controls, sliding side windows, and multiple fast-charging USB/power ports.
Engine and drivetrain
Under the hood, the top-tier Techno+ trim relies on Renault’s proven, Euro 6-compliant turbodiesel engine. Powering the Trafic is a 2.0-Litre 4-cylinder Blue dCi Turbo Diesel mated to an EAG9 9-speed automatic transmission, designed for smoother gear transitions, lower fuel consumption on long-distance cruising, and responsive power delivery under full load. The combo delivers 125kW and 380Nm for strong off-the-line pulling power.
When it comes to towing, you get up to 2 500 kg (braked towing), making it capable of pulling large trailers, boats, or cargo pods. Combined consumption averages ~6.2 to 7.2 L/100 km depending on loading and wheel setup. Combined with an 80-litre fuel tank, it offers a highway range exceeding 1 000 km on a single fill.
The Drive
The drivetrain in the Trafic is phenomenal. The engine pulls from low down, shifting the bulk of the van quite pleasantly. The transmission shifts imperceptibly, with the whole package delivering a quiet and enjoyable drive. The suspension is pliable enough for a comfortable ride as a passenger and responsive enough to deliver an engaging experience for the driver.

Verdict
The Trafic Passenger is a versatile, high-capacity passenger transport vehicle tailored for large families, shuttle services, and tourism operations. The drivetrain is excellent, but the final fit and finish of the interior leaves something to be desired. It is very plastic and not the good kind. Unfortunately, in a market segment dominated by the likes of the Ford Tourneo and Volkswagen Transporter. The Trafic falls a bit short on its interior trimmings and doesn't feel like a million rand vehicle. If you are considering an MPV of this type and are not overly concerned by plush interior trimmings, the Trafic is a great value proposition.
