In late 2024, Omoda introduced the C9 to South Africans. The C9 was something of a departure for the brand, which had mainly focused on budget-oriented compact SUVs. The C9 has taken Omoda into a new stratosphere with its luxurious appointments and premium fitment, taking the fight to well-established marques such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia in the premium mid-size SUV segment.

Recent data suggests that consumers are increasingly purchasing with their wallets rather than their hearts, opting for vehicles that offer a great deal at an affordable price point. The Omoda C9, although not cheap, does offer an incredible value proposition over its segment competitors, who are all competing in the same value range. Let's take a look at the Omoda C9's pricing and what its comparable competitors have to offer for the same money.

The Omoda C9 takes the fight right to key rivals from automotive giants such as Volkswagen and Kia while offering more specification and, dare I say it, a more luxurious slant. With its lower price tag, the front-wheel drive model will be where your money is better spent
The C9 costs R885 900 and the AWD model offers a lot of car for the money. Volkswagen, which has done a great job with its pricing, now has a turbodiesel version of its Tiguan available for R755 700, allowing prospective buyers R100 000 to choose in terms of options on the VW to match the price of the C9. I feel that the front-wheel drive C9 model, at R760 000 (R785 900 after the launch special), which does without the adaptive LED headlights, the headrest-mounted speakers and the adaptive suspension, is likely where most buyers will find the most value.
All models come with a 5-year/150 000km warranty, a 10-year/1.0-million km engine warranty, and a 7-year/100 000km service plan, with service intervals every 15 000km.

The Tiguan has always been a sensible buy for practical people who make decisions with their heads rather than their hearts. With all the new interior tech, spec, and a sexy new exterior, the Tiguan will win with buyers of all sensibilities and personality type
The Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with a 3-year / 120 000 km warranty and a 5-year / 90 000 km EasyDrive Service Plan, including a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000 km.

Having been introduced a year ago locally, Kia has revised the Sportage line-up and has placed an emphasis on diesel-powered options as it has spotted a gap in the market where the R600 000-700 000 price bracket has a distinct lack of diesel options. While the world is slowly moving away from diesel engines, many markets, South Africa included, still have a massive demand for these powertrains, and the 1.6-litre CRDi motor available in the Sportage is impressive in terms of fuel returns. However on a like-for-like basis, we have looked at the petrol offerings only, the petrol-powered 132kW/265Nm 1.6 T-GDi is available only in three GT-Line models.
All Sportage models come as standard with a 5-year /unlimited kilometre warranty and a pre-paid 6-year / 90 000 km service plan.

Verdict
The mid-size SUV segment is busier than ever, even on the premium end. The Omoda C9 has a lot to offer buyers but with it being so closely priced to other well-established brands that have a legacy history in SA, it is going to prove to be Omoda's biggest chore convincing customers to get one.. Although it does offer a great deal, the very close pricing proximity to the Volkswagen, makes it a hard sell for this writer but you should not overlook it if shopping in this segment.
