Nissan GT-R: Which trim level depreciates the fastest?

The Nissan GT-R is a cult car loved by many and has graced South African shores over its tenure. Which trim level depreciates the fastest though?

Buying a Car3 min read

The R35 Nissan GT-R has been around for some time. Since 2008 to be exact, it has been considered a cult car by enthusiasts and motorists alike. The GT-R has received numerous updates with refinements to what is already considered a doctor's tool. Precision is an understatement here. The most significant updates for this vehicle occurred in 2011 and 2017, respectively, so those models would be the ones to look at most.

You had the choice of 4 models over the years in South Africa, namely the Premium, Black Edition, Track Pack and, in 2019, the 50th Anniversary Edition. This vehicle has played in the supercar space, and even more than 10 years on, it still has the legs to compete and has cemented itself as a motoring icon. It's worth mentioning that there's also a massive aftermarket scene for this vehicle which can affect residual values for this vehicle.

1. 2009 Nissan GT-R 3.8 Premium / Black Edition

Interestingly, the initial GT-R Premium and Black Edition models have retained around 80% of their value. Many tend to desire the later facelift models, but it's surprising to see that they've both come down to the same used market value.

Price as New: R1 252 100 (Premium) R1 237 000 (Black Edition)

Used Market Value: R999 900

Value Retained: 80%

2. 2011 Nissan GT-R 3.8 Premium / Black Edition

The 2011 models saw some refinements to the GT-R formula. While we couldn't find a Black Edition to compare pricing with, we did manage to find a Premium variant.

Price as New: R1 261 200 (Premium) R1 277 200 (Black Edition)

Used Market Value: R 949 990 (Premium)

Value Retained: 75.32%

3. 2019 Nissan GT-R 3.8 Premium / Black Edition

The 2019 GT-R saw a big model update with further refinements and cosmetic updates. In this instance, the 2019 Premium model has actually appreciated in value by 11%. Unfortunately, there weren't any 2019 Black Edition models that qualified for our criteria.

Price as New: R2 526 900(Premium) R2 650 900 (Black Edition)

Used Market Value: R2 799 900 (Premium) N/A (Black Edition)

Value Retained: 111% (Premium)

Verdict

It's worth noting that with the Nissan GT-R because it's a niche vehicle, there are few examples to get a standard average. Another factor that complicates the calculations here is that because these vehicles are prone to modifications, such changes can affect the market pricing of a particular GT-R. Keeping that in mind, the Nissan GT-R, from our observations, has maintained its value quite well and has even appreciated in some instances. If you'd like to see some Nissan GT-R on offer, you can search AutoTrader. While you are on our website, why not try out our Instant Offer tool to sell your current car quickly and easily to fund that potential GT-R purchase?
