Is the Suzuki Grand Vitara good for long drives?
With its contemporary design, upgraded features, and spacious cabin, the Grand Vitara has captured the attention of many value-seeking car buyers. But the question remains: Is it suitable for long drives? Let's dive into the details to find out.
The new Grand Vitara (read our launch report here) fits in perfectly with the newest Japanese auto design trends. With its multi-level grille, distinctive daytime running lamps, and jewel-effect headlamps it looks current and on-trend. But is it any good at long-haul travel? We reckon it will make a great road-tripper but it's not without its faults. Let's focus on everything that will contribute to making your journey a great one. (Find out if it's any good for new drivers here.)
A spec-filled interior
The interior of the new Grand Vitara has undergone significant improvement from the rather bland (interior wise) outgoing model. The new GV is designed to appeal to a variety of drivers, as evidenced by the addition of a sleek touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, chrome accents, and glossy piano black details. Even more luxuries, like a wireless charging tray, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof, are available on the higher-end GLX models.
Safety
You'll find the following standard safety equipment across the board in the Grand Vitara range:
- Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology
- ABS and EBD
- Brake Assist
- Electronic Stability Programme
- Front, side and curtain airbags
- ISOFIX Child Seat anchors (x2)
- Immobiliser
- Security Alarm System
- Rear Park Distance sensors

Fuel economy
The new K15C mild-hybrid petrol-electric powertrain and the K15B petrol engine are the two engine choices for the 2023 Grand Vitara.
Power figures for the non-hybrid K15B are rated at 77kW and 138 Nm, while the hybrid model has 76kW and 137Nm on tap. Saving fuel is the hybrid system's main goal, so performance isn't significantly improved.

We found the Grand Vitara's fuel economy to be quite modest during our test drive on launch, revealing average consumption of between 7.8 and 10 litres per 100 kilometres - but bear in mind that the four-wheel-drive hybrid model is also heavier than the non-hybrid models and the heavier the car, the higher the fuel usage.
To get a more precise fuel consumption figure, we would have to take the Grand Vitara on a road trip - but figures of around 7.5 litres per 100 km out on the open road sounds like a fair estimate. Watch this space for the upcoming review.
Pricing
There are numerous models in the Grand Vitara lineup to accommodate various tastes and price ranges. When it comes to value, the entry-level GL manual model is a bit of a steal, because of its manual gearbox, which would be my top choice.
- 1.5 GL manual - R339 900
- 1.5 GL 4-speed auto - R359 900
- 1.5 GLX manual - R397 900
- 1.5 GLX 4-speed auto - R417 900
- 1.5 Hybrid GLX 6-speed AllGrip auto - R529 900
Although there is fierce competition in this market, alternatives like the smaller Suzuki Vitara and the Renault Duster each offer distinctive features and functionalities - the AWD Duster, for example, is known for being very capable off-road. And although the Suzuki Jimny only has a small amount of space inside, it is still one of best option for more intense four-wheel-drive experiences due to its all-wheel-drive capability.

Verdict
For those looking for a multipurpose vehicle for their daily commute, city driving, and even long distance road trips, the 2023 Suzuki Grand Vitara presents an appealing option. It combines a cosy yet spacious interior, a variety of safety and convenience features and very good value for money. There might be better options available, though, if you're looking for a more extreme off-roading experience or exceptional fuel efficiency. The decision ultimately comes down to what you value and prefer as a driver.
