Is the Opel Crossland X good for new drivers? Here is our verdict

The Opel Crossland X was first launched in South Africa back in 2017, Opel, unfortunately, left the country shortly after that but was brought back via the Williams Hunt Group. One of the brands more popular models, the Crossland X can be bought new or used but is it a good choice for new drivers?

What is a Crossland X?

The Opel Crossland X is somewhat of a compact SUV that offers plenty of space inside. Styling is conservative yet modern LED Daytime-Running Lights (DRL’s) feature upfront as does a stylish bumper. The car is also available with a contrasting black roof which adds another element to its attractive appearance. The rear features LED taillights and a large rear hatch door which makes loading the 410-litre boot easy.

The Crossland X is available with a choice of two different engines. There is a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit which develops 81 kW and 205 Nm and then there is a 1.6-litre turbo diesel option which 68 kW and 230 Nm of torque. So let us get down to the task at hand and explain why we think the Opel Crossland X is a worthy option for new drivers.

It is an SUV

Thanks to its SUV like qualities the Opel in question has a ground clearance of 124mm which means that you can not only navigate some un-kept city streets or even some light gravel roads for when you need to get away from the city. The Opel also makes use of 205/60 R16 tyres, thicker sidewalls aid in durability. The Crossland X also offers a raised driving position which tends to give many drivers a sense of security behind the wheel.

The safety features

The more safety features a car has, the better. Heading out on our South African roads these days is a risk in itself for even the most experienced drivers. Thankfully the Opel offers a host of safety features as well as driver aids to ensure that your experience behind the wheel is as stress-free as possible. The Opel features ABS brakes, electronic traction and stability control, ISOFIX child seat mountings, six airbags, hill start assist which prevents the car rolling backwards on a hill as well as emergency brake light flashes when you activate the ABS after hard braking. One of the biggest safety and driver assistant highlight is an intelligent emergency braking system which operates via a tiny camera in front of the vehicle which detects other vehicles and also pedestrians. The Opel also features auto-levelling lights, high-beam assist and cornering lights

Comfort

The cabin features high-quality materials with chrome finishes that are not too obtrusive. The interior is loaded with storage compartments and bottle holders. You can play music via Bluetooth, USB or Apple CarPlay, but sadly Android Auto is not available.  All infotainment options are controlled via the 7" touchscreen displayed. The Opel also offers clever seating adjustments which make loading easy. With the rear bench folded one can expect a 1 278-litre luggage area making the Crossland X very practical.

Running costs

As mentioned, there are two different engine options available for the Opel Crossland X. The 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol motor will consume around 4.9l/100km. The diesel-powered 1.6-litre turbo motor will use just 4.4l/100km according to the manufacturer figures. Both cars feature a 45-litre fuel tank which means that at current fuel prices it will cost around R600 to fill the tank.

Verdict

The Opel Crossland X is indeed a quality product. It offers great styling, impressive safety features and ease of use. It is indeed worth consideration for a first-time driver however, caution must be given regardless of the car. Responsibility and knowing your limits is key to your safety and those around you. Be alert at all times and ensure that you are comfortable and familiar with the vehicle.
