The Jaguar XF, the spiritual successor to the Jaguar S-Type, is a mid-size executive offering from Jaguar Land Rover. The first XF model was largely based on Ford componentry but those days are long gone and now the latest XF features a bespoke platform and aluminium cladding to make it lighter and more efficient than before. With over 83% of the X260 (2015 - present) parts being all-new, the XF only resembles its predecessor.

The Jaguar XF contends with the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6 ranges, offering a mid-size sedan with additional space and luxury appointments. Targeting the business person that's looking for a classy mode of transport, the XF is also packed with the sort of technology that the busy, corporate lifestyle individual demands.
With the targets set on the more established customer, it makes sense that potential buyers would be part of a family with children or teens and would need the vehicle to serve as a family vehicle as well. We're here to see if the Jaguar XF fits that bill or not.
1. Space
The Jaguar XF is not a small vehicle. It comes in at just under 5-meters long at 4962 mm and is 1880 mm wide (excl. mirrors). It is nowhere near as tall as an SUV though, and stands only 1456 mm tall. Despite the low roofline, interior space is more than generous with ample seating for 5 adults.
Front headroom comes in at 991 mm and rear headroom at 970 mm. You will get 1054 mm of front legroom and a respectable 958 mm at the rear. Boot space is a sizeable 459-litres and will comfortably swallow several sets of golf clubs, prams and luggage with consummate ease (albeit not necessarily at the same time).
2. Comfort and convenience
Leather upholstery and comfortable cruising is what the XF is about. It does it with a modern and contemporary British feel, so you don't have to worry about walnut interiors (unless you're into that - you're always able to spec an XF with it!). The 2020 model update saw the addition of several creature comforts that help create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere the cabin.
Cabin Air Ionisation is a system that improves air quality in the cabin, filtering out particles as small as PM2.5. This means a healthier environment for you and your passengers. The air is also purified using Nanoe technology.
Active Noise Cancellation features have been included to help cut down on noise pollution in the cabin. This too helps create a sanctuary inside the Jaguar XF where true relaxation can be found. Paired with the high-end trimmings, your comfort and that of your passengers is never a question.
The 2020 update also saw the addition of the new PIVI Pro infotainment system with its 11.4-inch touchscreen interface. This system will allow for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be used in the vehicle for a seamless transition from home to car. This is further bolstered by the dedicated power sully that boots the system up as soon as you unlock the vehicle, allowing for your phone to be connected by the time you sit down.
3. Safety
Safety is the least of your concerns with the Jaguar XF model range. With no fewer than 6 airbags, ABS, EBD, EBA, Lane Keep Assist, 360-degree camera with park distance control, and adaptive cruise control, the XF is a bastion of safety. New for the 2020 model year is the Clearview Rearview Mirror which ensures that you get an unobstructed view of the road behind, no matte how tall your rear passengers are.
The 2020 XF range has scored a full 5-stars in the Euro NCAP for additional peace of mind.

Verdict
No matter how the trends towards the SUV lifestyle sway you, there's no denying that the Jaguar XF is a great family car. Generous interior space, modern conveniences and a focus on passenger comfort make the XF a shoo-in for anyone looking to upgrade to a larger, more exclusive sedan offering. While it won't offer the ground clearance of an SUV, the roll-over risks are largely negated and if we're honest, how often do you really go off-road? One would have to consider the German rivals but current Jaguar pricing is making the XF rather attractive and unique.
