Is the Jaguar F-Pace good for families?

The F-Pace was Jaguar's first ever SUV and went on to receive the 2017 World car of the Year award as well as the World Car Design and World Car of the Year award. It is the fastest-selling Jaguar ever produced and demand continues to grow, especially in overseas markets. It's as stylish as it is dynamic, and we love its understated elegance. If you want an SUV that is different and special, you're going to love the F-Pace, but will it suit your family?

Buying a Car

When parents buy cars, they look for different set of vehicle attributes. Modern moms and dads will tell you that keeping the kids safe, entertained and comfortable is at the top of their list when buying a car. Let's take a look at what the F-PACE offers suburban families.

Infotainment and connectivity

The F-Pace has a ten-inch touchscreen as standard and there are four USB ports for everyone's tablets and smartphones. You also have the option of specifying a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot which allows for the simultaneous connection of eight different devices.

The infotainment system has the smartphone pack as standard that allows screen mirroring and Apple CarPlay. Other optional packs such as Navigation Pro, Connect Pro and InControl Apps allow extended connectivity features. Another luxury option is the Remote Premium Pack that allows you to access the car via an app on your phone to turn on climate control, find your car in a crowded parking lot, and lock/unlock your F-Pace's doors, to name but a few of its capabilities.

Space and Practicality

Throughout the F-PACE you'll find neatly placed, versatile storage binnacles. There are useful pockets for smartphones and other small items either side of the centre console, as well as below the touchscreen. Three adults will comfortably fit on the rear bench. (Jaguar says rear leg and knee room are 944mm and 65mm respectively.) You'll have no problem fitting child seats into the ISOFIX anchorage points, either.

The F-PACE has generous boot capacity of up to 650 litres.  The rear seats have a 40:20:40 configuration and can be folded completely or individually, to accommodate both passengers and awkwardly shaped longer items.

With the rear seats folded, F-PACE's total load space is up to 1,731 litres. The cargo area boasts a parcel shelf that can be stowed under the boot floor. The boot floor is reversible and can be switched from "luxury carpet to an easy-clean, rubberised surface", says Jaguar, perfect for wet dogs or scuba diving equipment. Bear in mind, however, that the model you choose will dictate whether your F-PACE has a tyre repair system, full sized spare or space saver, and this will ultimately determine what your luggage area's configuration, size, and surface will be.

Loading items into and out of F-PACE is fuss-free, thanks to the low loading height and wide boot opening. A powered tailgate and “gesture” tailgate are available as options. The latter allows you to place your foot under one of F-PACE's rear corners and the tailgate will open or close automatically.

We reckon the F-Pace Activity Key (below) is worth specifying if you don't know what to do with your car keys when you go for a surf or a swim.  The Activity Key allows you to lock your keys safely in the car but when you return, the proximity sensor inside will unlock  to your car. You wear it on your wrist like a watch and it's completely waterproof.

Safety

The F-PACE is filled to the brim with standard safety features. This includes front and rear parking aids, cruise control (with limiter), fatigue detection, lane keep assist, and a rearview camera. Should you want surround view cameras for a bird's eye view around the car, you will have to pay extra. Interestingly, blind spot assist is also optional. There's a whole host of optional packs available such as the Park Pack (with park assist, the 360-degree camera, and a rear traffic monitor) as well as the Drive Pack (with adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and blind spot assist). The Driver Assist Pack offers features from both above mentioned packs.

Verdict

The F-PACE is an excellent SUV that has been designed with the active and connected family in mind. It's a bit of a left-field choice in a segment of the market overrun by premium German cars, so if you're more of an individualist, the F-PACE will suit you perfectly.
