Is Mercedes-AMG good for families?

We take a look at the local offering from Mercedes-AMG to see which of these sporty models will be good for families

Top Tier Performance

Like many other manufacturers, Mercedes offers some models on a tier system, that being Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz AMG-Line and all out AMG. Mercedes-Benz' are the base entry level styled models with the AMG-Line models receiving a few mechanical upgrades, but mostly styling options. The AMG models receive the most specification changes with larger displacement engines and sportier interior fitment.

If you are wanting an AMG branded model and were wondering which of the models would be best for your family, you can check out our list of AMG models below and how each would fair with a few extra persons.

A Class

The A35 and A45 are the hot hatch entries for Mercedes. These cars are not overly suited for families as the hard suspensions and lack of rear legroom are not conducive to family activities. Small families can get away with one, but these hatch backs are squarely aimed at young professionals that enjoy the sportier side of life.

CLA

The surprise of 2020, the CLA35 and CLA45 are compact sports sedans that not only offer an excellent dynamic drive but space to haul the family as well. The CLA has a large boot for carting around the day-to-day items and has a high safety rating to keep your loved one's safe.

C Class

The most popular Mercedes model gets the AMG treatment in the form of the C43 and C63. These are well suited to families that want all the benefits of the normal C Class but also the performance advantages of an AMG derivative. Sadly the sedan is on the decline and is being replaced by the GL models as you will see later on our list.

E Class

The E53 and E63 are the slightly more executive models in the sedan range. These vehicles enjoy a much greater following in Europe than in South Africa, and much like the C Class enjoys a large following with small families and business executives. Unfortunately, just as with the C Class the sedan is on the decline and is being replaced by the SUV.

GL Series

Many have said that the high performance SUV is rather pointless but the sales of these vehicles proves otherwise. The GLC, GLE and GLS are ideal family vehicles that have the go to match the show. Large boots, spacious interiors and just as large engine displacements as well as Intelligent Driving modes make the GL series a very popular choice for medium-sized families.

Gelandewagen

Although there are other G-Wagon models on sale, the only derivative to carry the AMG badge is the bonkers G63. This behemoth has the gigantic twin turbo V8 engine and space for an entire family and more. High levels of comfort and a large boot make the G63 a great option family transport if you are well heeled.

GT

One of the lesser known AMG model lines is the GT. These high performance models may not be the best option for a small family. The GT may have four doors but the sportier suspension and large engine may not be the best choice for a family in tow. The GTS and GTR are the top of the performance pile and are not suited for a family at all due to only having two seats and zero space for anything but a briefcase.
