In the past in was quite en-vogue to have a large family - families with six children were quite commonplace. Cars were bigger and safety wasn’t a primary concern so squeezing those aforementioned six kids into a car happened very often.

Nowadays, most families follow the ideal average, two parents and 2.5 kids with a dog and most car companies cater for that average.
