If you're considering bringing a GLC SUV or GLC Coupé home, you're probably wondering if this Bavarian rockstar will stand the test of time or if it will leave you stranded on the side of the road.
After pouring over heaps of data and chatting with two workshop owners who regularly service German premium SUVs, the jury is in!
But first, let's look at the GLC's glamorous past here in Mzansi.
Mercedes-Benz GLC history in SA
The C-Class-based Mercedes-Benz GLC entered the local market in 2015, offering a more dynamic driving experience, with a focus on on-road comfort and a generous sprinkle of off-road capability. We drove it in Nambia on launch; read all about it here.
Towards the end of 2019, the GLC was thoroughly facelifted, inside and out, with more spec, tech, and power. We recommend that you read Driven: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Facelift here.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLC and GLC Coupé
In 2023, Mercedes-Benz introduced the second and latest generation of the GLC, sporting mild-hybrid technology for improved fuel efficiency and a convenient power boost, along with more off-road skills for those who like to go on adventures.
In 2024, the Coupé version arrived on the scene, with its swooping fastback roof and all the premium bells and whistles. It's this model that local buyers are going crazy for.
Since these new models are still too new to judge according to their reliability, one can only predict how reliable they will be. While full hybrid cars are usually more expensive and more complex when it comes to servicing and repairs; mild-hybrid cars (aka MHEVs) are considered more reliable.
Verdict: The GLC is one of Mercedes-Benz's most reliable cars
Both workshop owners I chatted with had nothing negative to say about the Mercedes-Benz GLC from 2015 to 2022 (without the mild-hybrid system; the 2023 models and beyond are just too new to know how reliable they are yet). They both received minimal complaints from customers about these cars and rarely had to deal with any real issues, electronic or otherwise.
Both gentlemen I spoke to agreed that if you service and maintain your GLC as the booklet stipulates, it should give you many years of reliable service.
For this reason, buying a used GLC is not a bad idea but remember that all premium car services are usually quite pricey. What I would not do is take my Mercedes-Benz to an independent service centre.
"The independent service centres do not have the backing of Mercedes-Benz, do not have access to technical support through Mercedes-Benz, do not conform to the required standard and, in many cases, do not have the required diagnostic equipment to effectively maintain your Mercedes-Benz. Mercedes-Benz is well aware of the independent service outlets and is in the process of establishing service and repair centres aimed at vehicles out of motor plan, a more affordable option than the current dealer network." - Sandown Motors
As for buying a new GLC, If I had the money, I would probably buy one, but sell before the maintenance/service plan runs out, or definitely consider going the Mercedes-Benz's Agility Finance route for peace of mind.
