Trail fix
The Land Rover Discovery or "Disco" for short, was originally visaged to be an offroad capable family car that was set to replace the void left by the Range Rover moving to a higher price point in the luxury segment. The Sport derivative came about in 2014 when Land Rover decided to make a slightly more affordable, rough-and-tumble version for the masses.

Replacing the Freelander model, the Discovery Sport is a small to mid-size SUV that has some decent offroad chops and a fair amount of top-tier tech and convenience items that put it on par with stablemates such as the Jaguar E Pace and Ranger Rover Evoque that utilize the same platform, but with all this tech, how reliable is it?
Warranty and Aftersales
The Discovery Sport is sold with a 5 year / 100 000km warranty and a 5 year / 100 000km maintenance plan, so you have that peace of mind. A broad search of consumer report backs also suggests that most owners are happy with their purchase and the service they receive from dealerships These reports also suggest that the majority of consumer complaints relate to faulty JLR electronic equipment such as infotainment systems and parking brakes.
Parts and Service
The last Kinsey report, an industry-accepted reliability and parts report, suggested that the Discovery Sport comes in with a complete parts' basket of R228 823, which is the third highest in the segment. Service parts will run at about R6 516 on average, but the good news here is that your local dealership should have most of these service parts off the shelf with only larger items requiring import.
Verdict
After exhaustive research, we have come to find that the Discovery Sport gets a global rating of 3.5 stars out of 5 on the reliability front with a large part of reports stating that when the Sport works it worlds near perfect and is almost faultless but when things go wrong they are catastrophic. As with most of the JLR line-up, it would seem that the roadside trail fix for problems that crop up is long gone and one should carefully consider taking one of these tech-laden, electronically equipped machines to some far-flung place because if something does go wrong or breaks you are going to need a rollback or a very comfortable pair of walking shoes.
