While the Ford Tourneo Custom is certainly not the newest vehicle in its segment, it has built a solid reputation for itself as a well-appointed people mover, however, this segment has seen impressive growth, with new products entering the fray on a regular basis. For our comparison today we will compare the flagship Tourneo Custom 2.0 SiT SWB Limited with two similarly priced rivals, namely the Hyundai Staria Multicab and the Opel Zafira Life Edition. All three models feature four-cylinder turbodiesel engines, automatic gearboxes and offer a great deal of practicality. The question today is, which has the lowest running costs?

Our contenders all feature four-cylinder turbodiesel engines with the Staria having the largest displacement and most torque at 2.2-litres and 430Nm, however, the engine in the Ford is most powerful with 136kW. The Opel is the lightest product here by over 200kg, though, and therefore has the lowest claimed fuel consumtion.
Service plans
Our trio have varying service and warranty plans, with both the Hyundai and Opel coming with service plans, the former with a 6-year/90 000km plan and a 5-year/150 000km warranty and an additional 7-year/200 000km drivetrain warranty while the latter gets a 5-year/100 000km plan and 5-year/100 000km warranty. The Ford does not come with a service plan but gets a 4-year/120 000km warranty.
Verdict
Having looked at the data, we are confident that the Opel Zafira Life will offer the lowest running costs over the first five years of ownership.
