1. Roof Bar Set

While the Kombi is sizeable and has space for loads of, well, loads, increasing its carrying capacity is never a bad thing. VW-approved roof bars not only look cool when fitted, they can boost the Kombi’s load capacity by 100kg. This can then be used with the roof-bar-mounted bicycle rack, or even rooftop box to handle even more cargo.

2. Tailgate Bicycle Holder

For fitness-conscious types, this tailgate bicycle holder can be fitted to the rear of a Kombi. This is an option for when the roof-mounted holder is too high for your estate or garage entrance. You can also load up to 4 bikes, so you can be the designated driver for your cycling team.

3. Kenwood 250-watt Subwoofer

In the Kombi’s expansive interior, the sound from the OEM infotainment system can get a little lost. Thankfully for lovers of loud music there’s the option of adding in a powerful subwoofer to enhance things. It’s compatible with the factory infotainment system, making it easy to fit and put to work, although a dealership will fit it for you if you can’t do it yourself.

4. Rear Bumper Protector

Thanks to the height of the Volkswagen Kombi and the size of its tailgate, it’s rather easy to load and unload things through the rear hatch. It’s also at the perfect height to make you lazy enough to slide your luggage out, instead of lifting it up properly. It’s a great way to scratch your Kombi’s paint, so a rear bumper protector is a must to keep your Kombi in mint condition.

5. Thule Rooftop Tent

While Volkswagen has a version of the Kombi that’s more suited to touring, which incorporates a roof that can be raised for camping, that derivative (named the “California”) is quite a bit more expensive than a Kombi. Fortunately, that can put your Kombi on equal footing, making it a true camping companion. You might need to add a longer ladder, though.

*These accessories are all Volkswagen-approved, but most aren’t readily available through VWSA. They can be ordered in for you, but we’d suggest waiting until the Rand gains a little strength again.
