Is the Range Rover Velar a good car?

The Range Rover Velar is one of the youngest models in the Jaguar Land Rover range, positioned between the Discovery and the Discovery Sport as a sleek and stylish luxury crossover SUV. It has won numerous design awards and been named SUV of the Year for 2018 by News UK. While there have been a few reported faults, most were non-mechanical and stemmed from trim or infotainment concerns.

Which Land Rover Range Rover Velar is better: diesel or petrol?

Who is the Range Rover Velar a good car for?

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar is ideal for the image-conscious buyer that is looking for Range Rover class and sophistication. One that places the emphasis on appearances and on-road performance over off-road capabilities and things like wheel articulation.

Is the Range Rover Velar a good first car?

The Range Rover Velar is fitted with numerous driver assistance systems and safety features but the large size and compromised visibility make it less than ideal for inexperienced drivers. If fitted with the 360-deg camera system, parking is a lot easier, but we would still recommend cutting your teeth on something smaller and cheaper.

Is the Range Rover Velar a good family car?

Families will appreciate the space, comfort and convenience of the Range Rover Velar. It makes a great family vehicle for smaller families as it only has seating for 5. While it has a generous 673-litre boot, if you're needing seating for 7 you will need to go for the Land Rover Discovery.

Is there a Hybrid Range Rover Velar?

Yes, there is. The P400e range, available in S, R-Dynamic SE, and R-Dynamic HSE trims pairs a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder ICE with electric motors for a total power output of 297 kW and 640 Nm torque. This hybrid model is a PHEV and allows for external charging with 80% charge possible in only 30-minutes when using a 32kW DC fast charge outlet.

What’s it like to drive?

Whether it's a petrol or diesel model you choose to buy, you will be impressed by the smooth, quiet operation of the engine and the power available on hand. The models fitted with air suspension ride exceptionally smooth and remain rather capable off-road, should you ever feel the need to wander wide of the tarmac. The Velar is also fitted with an array of driver assistance system that take the fuss out of driving.

Reviewer's opinion.

My 83-year old father was to be my first passenger upon receiving the Velar. Being a car aficionado and having his fair share of rheumatism, he's an excellent judge of ride quality, which he found to be exemplary, as air-suspension is standard. What I didn't tell him, is that there were some crazy horses underneath the Velar's streamlined bonnet, frothing at the mouth to be unleashed.

Setting the Velar to Dynamic driving mode and pressing the button that pipes the exhaust note into the cabin, I put my foot down. The Velar emits a raspy, guttural growl, and catapults us into the horizon ahead. With zero lag (thanks to the Velar's supercharger) we reach that pesky speed limit in two shakes of a lamb's tail. My dad's still grinning from ear to ear as I drop him off at home 30 minutes later.

Interior

What is the Range Rover Velar like inside?

The interior is luxurious and stylish and everything you would want from a status icon like the Velar. Plush leather seats offer a choice of colour combinations with perforated leather and hardwearing fabrics available on request. The dual-screen infotainment system divides the entertainment from the vehicle functions and the use of horizontal lines, piano black trims and aluminium accents highlights further elevate the class of the interior.

Style

Sleek lines and smooth surfaces are the order of the day with the Velar. Instantly recognisable as a Range Rover, it carries a continuous seam that runs from the grille, down the sides and around the tapered rear end in a single, flowing manner. The door handles retract when the doors are locked, leaving a smooth side profile, devoid of unsightly distractions and nuisances. The large wheels fill the arches and complement the elegant lines of the Velar. Even when stationary, it appears to be in motion.
