Is the Mazda CX-30 a good car?

The Mazda CX-30 is the latest model line introduced by Japanese firm Mazda, filling the gap between the compact crossover CX-3 and the mid-size Mazda CX-5. Based on the latest Mazda3 platform, it carries the CX-30 name to avoid confusion with the China-only CX-4 model.

Who is the Mazda CX-30 a good car for?

The adventurous consumer that has kids or teens will gravitate towards the Mazda CX-30, especially if they're looking for something a little different from the wash of German offerings of late. Its sensible size makes it easy to drive and park with ample space inside for most families.

Is the Mazda CX-30 a good first car?

If you're a new driver and the CX-30 seem appealing, we see no reason as to why you shouldn't choose it. It may be somewhat larger than many of the first-time-friendly hatchbacks on the market but you will be getting into a car that has a host of driver aids and is still compact enough to navigate through shopping mall parking lots.

Is the Mazda CX-30 a good family car?

With 295-litres of boot space, the CX-30 is perfectly suitable for families. There may be others on the market that do offer more interior space but provided your children don't take up kayaking, the interior space of the CX-30 will suit their every need.

The CX-30 is also a safe vehicle with 7-airbags across the range, ABS with EBD as well as DSC for helping to ensure you stay pointed in the right direction.

Is there a Hybrid Mazda CX-30?

There is no hybrid option in the CX-30 range, South Africa is only offered a single engine choice, that of the 2.0-litre petrol mill, producing 121 kW and 213 Nm.

What’s it like to drive?

While not the most sprightly offering in the price category, one thing that Mazda does get right is the ergonomics and driver engagement. True to their KODO methodologies, the CX-30 is exciting to drive with great weighting of the controls and excellent feedback to the driver.

Reviewer's opinion.

Performance of the CX-30 isn't blistering, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of just over 11-seconds with the automatic gearbox that the South African market gets but as we've learned over the years, even a slightly less powerful Mazda can be enjoyable to drive. Mazda has veered from performance figures (and doesn't even quote them in its press material) but ensures that driver engagement is high on the priority list. - Chad Lückhoff, AutoTrader

Interior

What is the Mazda CX-30 like inside?

Open the door and you'll be treated by a high-quality interior with soft-touch surfaces and leather-bound goodness. While Mazda has taken the strange route of pairing dark drown leather with black plastic trimmings, the interior ties together well and feels exceptionally well-bolted together.

Style

The CX-30 is a sportier-looking vehicle than what you will find with the CX-5. It uses the same design language, that of the KODO design, as the rest of the contemporary Mazda range giving you flame sculpted panels and a lower roofline than most. Small, LED lights punctuate the body colours and black wheel arches lend off-road credibility to the design.
