The BMW X1 is a sub-compact crossover from BMW and is one of the smallest SUV-like offerings in their current portfolio. First introduced in 2009, the X1 is now in its second generation, launched in 2015 and updated in 2019. With over 1.2-million examples of the second generation sold since its launch, the BMW X1 is immensely popular, and for good reason. It's reliable, stylish and practical for the smaller family.

Is the BMW X1 a good family car?

While it looks like a large BMW SUV, the X1 is built on the same UKL2 platform that is shared with the X2 and MINI Countryman. As such, it doesn't have as much space as one would expect but families with young children will manage just fine. It has a 505-litre boot that is expandable to 1550-litres with the seats folded down.

What’s it like to drive?

Former BMW owners may not appreciate the front-wheel-drive boas of the X1 but for the rest, the X1 will feel stable and secure on the road with good comfort levels and predictable road manners. Sportier models are not shy on power and even the entry-level X1 drives like a respectable luxury car.

Reviewer's opinion.

When receiving the test BMW X1, it was immediately noticeable how much more refined and softer the new X1 has become. It feels like a much bigger car inside, and has that refined new-generation BMW driving feel, helped by soft-touch materials. -  AutoTrader
