Is the BMW M4 a good car?

The M4 Coupé is what petrol-heads dream about. It's an excellent car, if you can afford it.

Who is the BMW M4 a good car for?

The M4 is suitable for BMW purists who can afford the M name tag, and who have the necessary advanced driver training.

"The BMW 4 Series Coupé M Automobiles offer a fascinating combination of aesthetics, character and typical M athleticism. Leading the trio is the BMW M4 Competition Coupé with an impressive 375 kW and 650 Nm of torque. Equipped with a high-performance BMW M TwinPower Turbo power unit, 8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic, optional all-wheel drive M xDrive*, Active M Differential and numerous technologies derived from motorsport, it guarantees maximum driving dynamics – both in everyday use and on the race track.  Rounding off the model range is the BMW M440i xDrive Coupé: apart from the attractive design, the sports coupé inspires with an especially balanced mix of athleticism, efficiency and convenient everyday utility." - BMW

Is the BMW M4 a good first car?

New drivers who are keen on having a BMW as their first car, should perhaps look at non-M models, rather. It wouldn't hurt to attend a few advanced driving classes either. If you buy a performance model, BMW usually throws in an advanced driving course, but you would have to check with your local BMW dealership to confirm.

Is the BMW M4 a good family car?

It's not really aimed at families, but two kids can easily ride in the back. Getting in and out is never easy in a coupé, so bear that in mind.

Is there a Hybrid BMW M4?

The SA line-up has no M4 hybrids.

What’s it like to drive?

Reviewer's opinion

Lawrence took the M4 Competition Coupé to the racetrack and had an absolute blast, but warns that you would need to have the necessary driver training before taking full advantage of what this track-star has to offer. What does it look like?

Style

Due in part to that infamous mammoth grille, the M4's looks are polarising, yet most journalists who spend time with the M4 report that its over-the-top looks tend to grow on a person. Opting for a colour such as Sao Paulo Yellow (see below) will attract even more salacious looks from onlookers.

Interior

What is the BMW M4 like inside?

On the inside, it's all carbon fibre, digital displays and racing seats, with a predominantly driver-centric cockpit. The M models' interior have always been about performance rather than glamour, but those who appreciate a beautiful interior design will be highly impressed by its purposeful styling.

Tech highlights

  • Road, Sport, and Track driving modes
  • M Drive Professional including Drift analyser
  • Active M Differential
  • Integrated braking system with two pedal feel settings
  • BMW Live Cockpit Professional: fully digital display grouping with M-specific content and graphics
