Are Mercedes-Benz good first cars?

We take a look at the local offering from Mercedes-Benz to see which of these lower-tier models will be good for new drivers.

Buying a Car

German affair

Mercedes-Benz motor vehicles are excellent cars and as such would make a very good first car. The main stumbling block here is the cost. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are not cheap and as such fall outside the wheelhouse of many consumers. For the well-heeled driver though if you can afford to buy into the three-pointed star you can begin your Mercedes ownership journey with the lower tier models and work your way up.

Mercedes does offer a number of vehicles on the lower end of the spectrum and we have picked the models that you are most likely to encounter first.

A-Class

This is the entry into Mercedes ownership. The A-Class offers many of the tech and luxury features that you will find in higher-end models if you are prepared to spec out your chosen model. With its compact size and good looks the A-Class makes an excellent first car.

B-Class

With slightly larger dimensions and many of the same features that you will find in the A-Class, the B-Class also makes an excellent first car if you are in need of more space.

C-Class

Mercedes' mid-tier sedan and most popular model sold in South Africa for many years, the C-Class, has long been the go-to model for first time buyers. Its overall dimensions may deter some new drivers though.

E-Class

Taking a step up from the popular C-Class, the E-Class has a lot more tech and luxury fitment but may intimidate new drivers. If they can handle the cost and don't mind the size, the E-Class would make a brilliant first car.

GLA

It's no secret that crossovers and SUVs are taking over the market from sedans and hatchbacks. With a slightly higher ride height and a few activity related styling touches, the GLA is the first stop for new drivers that are looking for a taste of the Mercedes crossover life.

GLB

The new kid on Mercedes' South African block, the GLB, takes space, tech and style and rolls it into one competitive package that will appeal to new and old drivers alike.
