5 extras you should fit on a new Porsche Boxster
Touted as one of the cars that saved the Porsche brand back in the 90s, the importance of the Boxster cannot be understated. There are just two new Boxster variants available locally, and we have found 5 accessories that you should opt for when specifying your very own.
The idea of a small, drop-top mid-engine Porsche was clearly a tempting one as the Stuttgart-based automaker’s decision to launch the 986 Boxster back in 1996 is considered one of the many products, including the Cayenne, that saved the brand from financial turmoil. Now in its fourth generation, the Boxster forms part of a far larger Porsche line-up, a portfolio that makes its financial woes of the past appear a distant memory.
The current 982 generation of the Boxster has been with us since 2016 and was the first Boxster to introduce a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine to the Porsche lineup in the modern era. The common complaint with the four-cylinder Boxster models has been their lack of aural drama, however, the base and ‘S’ models of the updated Boxster are no longer available locally, instead, there are both the GTS and 25 year models which feature a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine. Since the 25 year model was unavailable for specification at the time of writing, we have selected the GTS model to add features to and have come up with 5 accessories that we feel will optimise your Boxster ownership experience.
1.Special colours-R53 610
There are five special colours available in the Boxster’s pallet, including Shark Blue, Carmine Red, Crayon, Lava Orange and Python Green. Since colour choice is an entirely subjective thing, we will leave the choice to you, however, our personal favourite is Shark Blue made famous by the upcoming 992 GT3 RS.
2.GTS interior package- R67 750
The GTS interior package adds GTS logos to the seat headrests and to the rev counter, provides coloured (Crayon or Red) stitching to various areas within the cabin, coloured (Crayon or Red) seat belts, floor mats with black edges complete with the Porsche logo as well as carbon trim for the centre console, door panel and dashboard.
3.Full bucket seats- R122 400
There are a few seat options within the GTS range, however, the most attractive option, in our opinion, are the full bucket seats made with carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and covered in leather with the Race-Tex centre. These seats feature a thorax airbag and are also electrically adjustable.
4.The 6-speed manual gearbox- Free
There is the option of a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK automatic gearbox within the GTS range. We would opt for the 6-speed manual as these gearboxes are increasingly rare within the sportscar realm. The ratios are rather long, however, the combination of a stick-shift with a naturally aspirated engine is a difficult driving experience to beat.
5.Burmester High-End Surround Sound System- R89 490
There are three audio options for the Boxster GTS range, the Porsche system, the Bose system and the flagship Burmester system. When you’re not listening to the lovely engine note in the GTS, the 821-watt Burmester system with 12 speakers, a 300-watt subwoofer and a digital amplifier will provide one of the best in-car audio experiences available today.
