1. Audi A1
The Audi line-up starts with the audacious A1 which is currently in its second generation, and a looker of note. Despite being the most affordable car in the Audi line-up, it's still rather pricey at R 441 000 new for the A1 Sportback 30TFSI. It is significantly more spacious than its predecessor, though. Cash-strapped? Why not opt for a used, previous-gen Audi A1 instead? Search for used Audi A1 models with less than 100 000 km on the clock, here. (We found an A1 Sportback 1.2TFSI from 2013 with 97 000 km for only R130 000.)
2. Audi Q2
If you have a few Rand more to spend, the Q2 is a fantastic option. Now you'll have style as well as substance if the odd dirt road is part of your journey on a regular basis. Small families will be impressed by its refinement and there's even space for a compact stroller. The most affordable Q2 is the 35TFSI Launch Edition at R519 500. It is powered by a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine and 7-speed dual-clutch auto transmission.

3. Audi A3
The third-most affordable Audi is the A3 hatchback/sedan which was launched recently. (Read our A3 launch report.)
Pricing for the A3 Sportback 35TFSI hatch starts at R561 000, while the sedan's pricing starts at R576 000.
Buying used? Consider the previous-generation Audi A3 hatch and sedan. Sedans are not in fashion at the moment (and they might never be again) so look for a good deal on these models here, from around R170 000.
