Get what you want
Almost all manufacturers will pre-build a number of makes and models with different variations of trim and equipment and then ship those vehicles to their dealerships. What this means is the vehicles you see on the sales floor have been put together based on historic consumer trends and sales data.

What is one to do though when the vehicle that you simply must have is not on their floor? You can place a factory order and have a car built to your exact specification. Although you may be getting exactly what you want from your car it does come with a few caveats.
One of One
Once you have built your dream car from the ground up, specifying all the trim and tech, the dealership will submit your order to the factory. Your factory order then goes into the manufacturer's production schedule and can take anything from a few weeks to a couple of months before it is ready to be delivered. The downside of this is of course you will wait an undetermined time before getting your car whereas taking a pre-built vehicle off the floor will see you in a new car in a matter of hours.
There is also the cost factor involved. Dealers can offer discounts on pre-existing stock and you could get a very good deal on a model gathering dust on their floor whereas you will be paying full price plus extra charges for non-standard specifications with your factory order.
