Top 3 things you need to know about the Porsche Macan
First introduced in 2014, the Macan has been a phenomenal sales success for the Porsche brand, offering a smaller, more affordable Porsche SUV that slots in below the Cayenne. Here are the top 3 things that you need to know about the Macan.
Based on the VW Group’s MLB platform which it shares with the likes of the Audi Q5, the Macan has been a great sales success for the German brand, often topping global Porsche sales charts, a position it exchanges with its larger sibling, the Cayenne, on a regular basis. Here are 3 things that you need to know about Porsche’s smallest SUV.
1.Four models, three engines
The current Macan range in South Africa consists of four models, ranging in price from just over R1.0-million to around R1.7-million. The entry-level model features a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine from the VW Group that produces 185kW and 370Nm of torque sent through a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (PDK) to all four wheels.
The Macan S gets six-cylinder power, with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that produces 260kW and 480Nm of torque also channelled through a 7-speed PDK gearbox to all four wheels. Both the GTS and Turbo models are powered by a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 mated with a 7-speed PDK gearbox. The GTS model produces 280kW and 520Nm of torque while the Turbo model produces 324kW and 550Nm of torque.
2.It’s safe
The Macan was tested by the Euro NCAP programme in 2014 where it scored the maximum 5-Stars, including 88% for adult occupant safety, 87% for child occupant safety, 60% for pedestrian safety and 66% for its safety assistance systems. The Macan is due for a new review as the rating from Euro NCAP expired as of January 2021.
3.There’s an electric version on the way
Porsche has confirmed that the next generation of the Macan will be electrified. The brand has also stated that the Macan EV will be based on the same 800-volt PPE architecture (Premium Platform Electric) as the all-electric Taycan. The petrol-powered range of Macan models will also remain on sale when the Macan EV is set to go on sale in 2022.
