If you've been watching the premium compact sedan segment with even the mildest of interest, you'll know the new Mercedes-Benz CLA has been one of the more anticipated arrivals of the year. With the market gravitating toward crossovers and SUVs, the release of a new sedan is rare. Mercedes-Benz South Africa has officially placed the third-generation CLA 200 on showroom floors, and the numbers and the tech are genuinely impressive.
The CLA is initially available locally in only a single derivative. Priced from R941,701, the CLA 200 is not what one would deem "cheap"; it's a premium product from a premium brand. That positions it just below the entry-level C-Class (the C200 Avantgarde from R943,506), which tells you everything about where Mercedes-Benz is positioning the new CLA. Included in that price is a 2-year/Unlimited km warranty*.
Engine and Performance
Under the bonnet is a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The electric motor lives inside the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, and together the combination produces 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque, sent exclusively to the front wheels. Mercedes-Benz claims a 0–100 km/h sprint of 8.0 seconds and a combined fuel consumption of 5.4 l/100 km.
Tech and Convenience
Inside, the centrepiece is the MBUX Superscreen, a sweeping, free-standing glass panel that combines a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster with a 14-inch central touchscreen. This is the fourth generation of MBUX, and it's the first in-car system to combine generative AI from both Microsoft and Google. ChatGPT-4o and Microsoft Bing power a "living" 3D avatar assistant that holds multi-turn conversations, remembers context and reads your responses. Over-the-air updates ensure it only gets smarter. A wireless charging pad, panoramic glass roof and star-shaped Multibeam LED lighting front and rear all come standard.
But it wouldn't be a premium German offering without an eye-watering options list. The local configurator lists options including:
- AMG Line package (R47,400)
- AMG Line Plus (R111,100)
- Multibeam LED headlamps (R11,200)
- Head-up display (R17,800)
- MBUX augmented reality navigation (R10,000)
- Burmester 3D surround-sound system (R21,500)
The CLA also marks the end of the A-Class in South Africa — this is the new entry point into the Mercedes-Benz compact family, and if this first derivative is anything to go by, it's a strong opening statement. Mercedes-Benz SA has confirmed additional models will follow in due course.
