Those in the market for their first car are spoilt for choice within the local market, particularly when shopping in the used market with over 18 000 cars listed for under R200 000 on AutoTrader. Students generally require efficiency, a reasonable degree of safety, affordable maintenance, reliability and an attainable list price as attributes in the vehicles that they purchase. We have whittled our list down to five cars that we think will make great first cars for those looking at used propositions.
1. Kia Picanto
The Picanto is one of the best small cars on the market, offering cheap servicing, low fuel consumption all of the standard features a new driver needs.
2. Suzuki Swift
The Swift is quickly becoming South Africa's best-selling passenger car and with good reason, it is cheap, economical nd is fun to drive, making it ideal for students.
3. Volkswagen up!
Despiet no longer being sold new, the up! presents a well-made, frugal and well specified student car package for very little money.
4. Ford Figo
The Figo is another product set to be discontinued locally, however, those in the market for a used example have many to choose from and will have a spacious, cheap to maintain budget car that performs wonderfully for the money.
5. Peugeot 108
The 108 is an often overlooked product, but it is incredibly safe, has shared underpinnings with the Toyota Aygo and is unbelievably light on fuel.
