Suzuki’s New Flagship: The Victoris Becomes the "Across" for South Africa
Suzuki Auto South Africa has officially confirmed that the all-new Victoris SUV will be heading to Mzansi shores in 2026. However, it won't be carrying its Indian moniker; instead, it will wear the "Across" badge locally.
While the "Across" name is used in Europe for a rebadged Toyota RAV4, the South African version is a distinct entity altogether. Built on the Global C platform by Maruti Suzuki, this new flagship is positioned just above the Grand Vitara, offering more technology, premium finishes, and a slightly larger footprint.
Dimensions and design
The Across isn't just a re-skinned Grand Vitara. While it shares the same 2 600 mm wheelbase, it has been stretched to an overall length of 4 360 mm (15 mm longer than the Grand Vitara) and stands 10 mm taller.
Visually, the Across adopts a more muscular, "upright" SUV stance. Expect a distinctive front grille, high-mounted LED DRLs, and a more aggressive rear profile designed to appeal to buyers looking for a "mini-flagship" feel.
What’s under the bonnet?
While international markets will offer a variety of drivetrains, including a Toyota-sourced "Strong Hybrid," the South African lineup is expected to focus on Suzuki's proven 1.5-litre K15C four-cylinder petrol engine.
Outputs: Roughly 76kW and 139Nm.
Transmissions: Choice of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic.
Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive will be standard, but the AllGrip Select AWD system is expected to feature on the range-topping automatic models.
Interior and tech specs
The "Flagship" label isn't just marketing speak. The Across (Victoris) is being positioned as the most tech-laden Suzuki ever sold in SA. Based on the Indian-spec Victoris, local buyers can likely look forward to:
| Feature | Details |
| Infotainment | 10.1-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto |
| Cluster | 10.25-inch fully digital driver’s display |
| Audio | 8-speaker Infinity sound system with Dolby Atmos |
| Comfort | Ventilated front seats and an 8-way powered driver's seat |
| Sunroof | Large panoramic sunroof |
| Safety | Level 2 ADAS (Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Braking) |
Why the name change?
The decision to use the "Across" nameplate in South Africa aligns with Suzuki’s strategy to utilise established global trademarks in the African and GCC regions. It also creates a clear distinction between this premium offering and the existing Vitara/Grand Vitara family.
Pricing and availability
While final pricing will only be revealed closer to the launch date, industry experts expect the Across to start north of the current Grand Vitara range, likely competing in the R500 000 to R650 000 bracket. This puts it in direct competition with the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
