Safety Recall: Over 25,000 VW Polo Vivos Flagged for Handbrake Fault
Volkswagen Group Africa has issued a significant safety recall affecting 25,729 units of South Africa’s favorite passenger car, the Polo Vivo. The recall, monitored by the National Consumer Commission (NCC), identifies a potential defect in the handbrake mechanism that could lead to vehicle roll-aways.
What is the issue?
According to the NCC, the recall concerns the rivet height on the handbrake lever. Internal investigations by Volkswagen revealed that some levers were fitted with rivets that fall outside of the required manufacturing specifications.
If the rivet height is incorrect, the handbrake may not engage properly when pulled. In rare and more serious cases, the handbrake could disengage unexpectedly after being set. This poses a significant safety risk, particularly when the vehicle is parked on an incline.
Which models are affected?
The recall affects Volkswagen Polo Vivo models sold nationally between February 2025 and February 2026.
As the Polo Vivo consistently tops the local sales charts, this recall impacts a vast number of South African motorists who have recently taken delivery of the budget-friendly hatchback.
What should owners do?
Acting Consumer Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu, has urged owners of the affected vehicles to contact an authorized VW dealership immediately.
"Given the high potential risks of the defect, owners of affected vehicles are urged to get their vehicles to any authorized VW dealership for inspection," Ratshisusu stated.
VW has confirmed that the inspection and any necessary repairs will be carried out at no cost to the owner.
Precautionary measures
Until your vehicle has been inspected and cleared by a dealership, the NCC and VW advise the following safety steps:
Park in gear: For manual models, ensure the car is left in first gear. For automatic models, ensure the selector is firmly in "P" (Park).
Avoid inclines: Avoid parking the vehicle on any slope—uphill or downhill—until the repair is completed.
Check the manual: Refer to your owner’s manual for additional parking safety protocols.
