New vs old Porsche Cayman GTS: what are the 4 main differences?

The new Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 builds on the success of the turbocharged Cayman GTS by increasing displacement and removing the turbo.

Automotive News

The Porsche 718 Cayman is a model that has been with us for a while now. The GTS model was introduced in 2017 and for the 2020 model year there's a new version that is guaranteed to excite purists. The Porsche GTS 4.0 promises to be more powerful, more visceral and deliver the kind of performance that some believe has been missing in the current Cayman GTS.

Here are the main differences between the Porsche Cayman GTS and the Cayman GTS 4.0

1. A new engine

The Porsche Cayman GTS is powered by a 2.5-litre, turbocharged, flat-four engine. It produces 269 kW with 420 Nm torque and is good for a 0 - 100 km/h sprint time of 4.6-seconds. While this may be more than enough for some, the Cayman GTS 4.0 dials things up to 11. The Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0 is now fitted with the engine from the Cayman GT4, a 4.0-litre, naturally aspirated flat-six. Power is increased to 309 kW while the torque remains the same at 420 Nm. With the six-speed manual gearbox, the 0 - 100 km/h sprint time is reduced to 4.2-seconds.

2. Sports exhaust

There's no point in having a beautiful flat-six engine and not being able to hear it. It's for this reason that the GTS 4.0 is fitted with a sports exhaust that ends off in a set of chrome-tipped dual exits. This makes the GTS 4.0 instantly recognisable from the regular GTS and means that the rear apron carries a new design as well.

3. Lowered suspension

To help with handling dynamics, the GTS 4.0 rests 20mm lower than the regular GTS and is equipped with PASM; Porsche Active Suspension Management. When fitted with the optional PASM Sport system, the GTS 4.0 rides only 10mm lower than standard. All models come with selectable PSM Sport mode, the Sport Chrono package, Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring with a mechanical limited-slip rear differential.

4. Alcantara trimmings

While not too different from the Porsche GTS, the GTS 4.0 has an improved cabin with carbon fibre inserts and Alcantara trimmings as standard for the ultimate in sporty luxury. In the GTS 4.0, the A-pillars and roof lining get the Alcantara treatment as standard as well.
